The papers consist of correspondence, writings, photographs, research files, printed material, and miscellanea of George Dudley Seymour, a lawyer, antiquarian, historian, author and city planner in New Haven, Connecticut. Seymour's personal papers and collected manuscripts document the history of the Seymour family, the patriot Nathan Hale, the city planning movement in New Haven, Connecticut, and local history, 1684-1944. General correspondence files contain the bulk of personal correspondence, with many figures from the fields of art, education, politics, and sculpture represented, including William Howard Taft, a close friend of Seymour's. Family genealogy files include extensive correspondence, papers, and photographs Seymour accumulated in the course of his research on (1939). Title: Reuben Rockwell correspondence and Colebrook Church records, 1863-1865.

Reuben Rockwell was a farmer in, and a State senator for, Colebrook, Connecticut. The first items in this collection are a series of political letters. One from Rockwell to Daniel Ryan in March 1863, referred to the Copperheads as "Secession Traitors", described an exciting campaign for our election and had no kind words for Thomas Seymour. A letter to Rockwell from O. Loomis was also political in content, and the soldier wished he could be at home to help with the campaign and cast his vote. The bulk of the collection consists of transcriptions of records of town meetings, 1780-1787, and a history of the church along with transcriptions of baptismal records, and lists of members of the church with biographical notes about them.

As a pioneer in New Haven's early city planning movement, Seymour amassed correspondence with such notable figures as Cass Gilbert and Frederick Law Olmstead, minutes of commission meetings, and clipping files which detail much of the city planning activity engaged in during the early 1900s. Topical files and scrapbooks document a wide range of literary and professional activities, including Seymour's writings on New Haven and Connecticut history, and his legal practice in patent law.

One of the more unusual items in this collection is a bill regarding a slave case in court. The owner, a New Jersey resident, thought he was purchasing a healthy slave when in fact the man was blind and had since had liver trouble. Other items include a Seymour family history, letters between Thomas Seymour and his sons David and Henry, a letter from Horatio Seymour to Henry Seymour, and a petition to Thomas H. Seymour, son of Henry and Jane Ellery Seymour, who was serving as Minister to Russia.
