The collection contains papers of four generations of members of the Meeks family of California and Richmond, Va. The papers of William Newton Meeks include a copy of his diary, 1839, kept during a trip to South America; an account book, 1876-1879, kept in San Francisco; and correspondence, 1860-1881, including letters from his Davis in-laws in Massachusetts and letters from his wife, 1874-1876, in Paris with their children. Papers of his daughter, Blanche Thayer (Meeks) Heath, include several hundred letters, 1888-1892, from her husband, John Heath, documenting their courtship, and papers, 1918-1919, relating to her work in a Red Cross canteen in France during World War I. The papers of her daughter, Constance Adela (Heath) Gregory, contain hundreds of post cards, 1909-1981, from family and friends and correspondence concerning her genealogy and family history. Also included are two scrapbooks documenting her social life in California, ca. 1905-1907, and in Richmond, Va., 1909- 1910, and two commonplace books, ca. 1907-1908, kept in school in Dresden, Germany, on German history and architecture and the development of western culture. Collection also includes some correspondence, 1927-1954, of her husband, George Craghead Gregory, and papers, 1927-1982, documenting the life and career of her son, Edward Meeks Gregory, an Episcopal minister and educator.
