Title: Robert Bonner papers 1860-1899

Robert Bonner (1824-1899) was a newspaper publisher and trotting horse breeder. He owned and published the New York Ledger. Collection consists of general correspondence, trotting horse papers, financial documents, writings, photographs, and artifacts. General correspondence includes letters to Bonner as proprietor of the New York Ledger, with a few drafts of his replies, mostly from contributors offering stories, suggesting plots, soliciting money, acknowledging remuneration, and relating to personal matters; letters from Presbyterian clergymen about church affairs; and letters from the owners of the New York Sun, New York Herald, and New York Times, revealing Bonner's willingness to lend financial aid to those newspapers. Papers relating to the breeding, development, and shoeing of trotting horses contain letters from owners, breeders, veterinarians, editors of sporting journals, and others from all parts of the United States, especially Kentucky; notes on horses; accounts; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical data and other material on the horse and on the Scotch Irish Society of America; and photographs, sketches and artifacts.

This collection includes daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and other cased photographs. Approximately half of the images are identified although the inventory contains brief descriptions of unidentified images by age, gender, or clothing style. Many of the daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes have full cases, while others may only have half-cases. The collection includes portraits of children, Civil War soldiers, men and women (some at the time of their marriages), a funeral image, a Civil War regiment, a factory, several buidings and a pet dog. Families represented by the images include: Andreuss, Baker, Baldwin, Cairns, Canfield, Clark, Coddington, Coe, Comer, Congar, Dickerson, Dodd, Douglas, Drake, Furman, Halsey, Halsted, Holden, Lee, Marsh, Mulford, Munn, Landau, Ross, Sayre, Smalley, Symington, Van Wagenen, and others. Individuals represented include: Mrs. Nathaniel Camp, John Willard Coddington, Rev. John Ford, Gen. N.H. Halsted, Rev. Matthew H. Henderson of Trinity Church in Newark, Jenny Lind, Henry K. McDowell, Dr. S.C. Marsh, Isaac Mulford, Gov. William S. Pennington, General Jose Paer, and General Winfield Scott.

Simpson, Frank T. Papers. 1944-1957.

Simpson was a graduate of the American Missionary Associations Tougaloo, field agent for Congregational Church extention Boards, first head of Connecticut Inter-Racial Commission state welfare commissioner. 3 scrapbooks contain clippings about the work and interests of Frank T. Simpson as a member of the Connecticut Inter-Racial Commission. The clippings indicate the state of affairs for blacks in Connecticut in the mid-40's when there were only 21 black teachers in the state, 12 salespersons, 6 nurses, and no craftsmen. Several of the clippings highlight firsts in jobs obtained and in educational opportunities. In addition to writing and speaking on social problems of blacks, Mr. Simpson attempted to alleviate problems during his tenure on the Commission, the Housing Authority, and through his work with Fair Employment Practices. He worked with the United Negro College Fund and was honored for his efforts to promote higher education, being active with the Greater Hartford Inter-Racial Scholarship Committee and the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro students. Names include Raymond A. Baldwin, Chester A. Bowles, Walter H. Gray, John C. Jackson, Henry C. McDowell, and Morris Silverman.
