McCalmont to his brother, re his cruise up the Potomac, impressions of Mount Vernon, and the divided opinion among Southerners he encountered in regard to secession, "[The South] regard[s] the election of Lincoln with a great deal of apprehension ... Some of the states will probably go out without stopping to see what he intends doing"; and 12 Nov. 1905, from J[ane] M[ason] G[ibbes], re her papal audience.
