Family correspondence, 1852 and undated. Included here is a letter by Lyman to his brother, Richard in Sacramento Valley (Calif.), dated Oct. 20 and Nov. 2-3, 1852, describing gold mining, killing Indians, bringing back an Indian scalp, plenty of wild game, and the destruction of Sacramento by fire. A second, undated letter to Lyman is from William and George Potter, which encourages people to come to Calif., and notes that whites are killing "diggers" (what local Indians were derogatively called by whites) by the hundred. A brief abstract of the letters (1 p., copy) is also included.

Letter of 29 Feb.: Lownes follows up on Potter's recent column in the Providence Journal concerning the Sprague murder trial, and notes that he owns copies of the original 1844 pamphlet and the 1884 reprint (the latter with annotations of William H. Potter, one of the prosecutors). He also owns Report of the Committee of South Kingstown (1855), and summarizes its contents ("a vivid story of early shenanigans" related to railroads) as the possible basis for a future column. 2 Mar.: He encloses the Report, and relates an anecdote concerning a descendant of Rowland G. Hazard, who was concerned in the 1854 incident that is the subject of the Report.
