James Williams was born on a farm near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, c. 1834. During the 1850s he lived in Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, and Colorado where he worked in farming, mining, and the lumber business. In 1863 he moved to Montana and went into the livery business. Williams later moved to Nevada Territory where he very briefly raised stock before returning to Virginia City, Montana Territory.

Williams, along with Paris Pfouts and Wilbur Fisk Sanders formed the executive committee of the Montana Vigilance Committee, organized in December 1863. The vigilantes had hanged all of Henry Plummer's gang, "the Innocents," by the spring of 1864.

In 1871 Williams was elected county commissioner of Madison County, serving until 1873, when he resigned to run for sheriff. Williams lost the election, and ranched in Montana until his death in 1887.

Title: Family papers, 1833-1896.

Correspondence, legal records, clippings, and general store account books of the Collier family of Charlotte, Tennessee. Most of the correspondence relates to Henry Clements Collier, including ca. 200 inquiries from residents of the northern U.S. about Tennessee lands during the Reconstruction period. Other family members represented in the collection are John C. Collier, William Clements Collier, Christopher Columbus Collier, Charles Bell Collier, and Benjamin Anderson Collier. Their papers relate to business and personal activities. Of special interest is material pertaining to the invention of a fountain pen in 1874 by H.C. Collier. Other correspondents include Neill S. Brown, Adam J.G. Adams, W.C. Rutland, James H. Williams, V.L. Williams, and W.H. Garrett.

James Williams (1832-1887) was a leader of the Vigilantes in Nevada City, Montana Territory. Collection consists of a letter (January 31, 1886) from him to James Edward Callaway; and a biographical sketch of Williams by John M. Williams. (SC 1418) This collection consists of a biographical sketch (n.d.) of Williams' early life and a brief letter (1886) from James Williams to Colonel Edmund Callaway describing cattle sales and Williams' vow not to drink whiskey.
