These records contain background research materials and notes created by I. T. Littleton during the writing of his book entitled . The D. H. Hill Library : An Informal History, 1887-1987 The first library at North Carolina State University was a room in Holladay Hall during the early years of the institution. The library was chronically under-funded and faculty and students consistently complained about a lack of materials. The room in Holladay continued to serve as the library until the construction of a new purpose-built library building, what is now Brooks Hall. In 1954, the current building, the D. H. Hill Library, was opened. This building now comprises the east wing of the current structure. By the mid-1960s, the Hill building was no longer large enough, and the libary space was expanded by building an 11-story book tower and connecting the original space with the former student union (now the Erdahl-Cloyd or west wing of the library). Further expansion and renovation occurred in the 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the opening of the second, or "south" bookstack tower.

Title: Isaac Thomas Littleton Papers 1953, 1958-1989, 1968, 1987

The Isaac Thomas Papers contains the 1968 doctoral dissertation of Littleton, titled from the library science program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a letter, 1968, to Littleton from Rolland E. Stevens, professor of library science at the University of Illinois, regarding the publication of a shorter version of the monograph. This collection also contains personal correspondence, speeches, copies of photographs, historical information on North Carolina State Universities Library and aricle drafts. Finally, there are the following items regarding his retirement in 1987, greeting cards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, a guestbook, cassette tapes, and other related items. The Bibliographic Organization and Use of the Literature of Agricultural Economics, Isaac Thomas Littleton (1921- ) received an A.B. from the University of North Carolina in 1943, an M.A. from the University of Tennessee in 1950, and M.S. and Ph.D. in library science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1951 and 1968. He came to the D. H. Hill Library at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1959, as head of technical services and assistant director of libraries. Appointed acting director in 1964, Littleton succeeded Harlan Craig Brown as director of libraries in 1967, and retired in 1987.

The Director's office records of the North Carolina State University Libraries contain correspondence and memoranda, budget information, program and event brochures, meeting minutes and agenda, catalogs, and other items recording the administrative functions of the Libraries.
