This collection mainly consists of property records pertaining to lands of William Bull, Jr. (1748-1799) on the Santee River, St. Matthew's Parish (Orangeburg District, S.C.). Among the Bull family papers is also a letter (1828) from Gracia C. Turnbull (later Gracia Bull) to Ann B. Smith; a letter (1864) from Rosa [Guerard] in Hardeeville, S.C., to [Miss] Wilding T. Desaussure which mentions her husband Willie (William B. Guerard) who "has been detached by Capt. Heyward and sent here to get out the rice crop," and discusses family members and social activities at Christmas; and genealogical notes on the Bull and Pringle families. Additional miscellaneous items include letters of administration (1765) to "Barbara Epting of the forks of Saludy [Saluda], Widow" naming her administratrix of the estate of John Adam Epting; a sketch of Ashley Hall Plantation, showing the house as it looked in 1864; a letter (undated) from Dr. William Izard Bull to his children urging them to lead godly lives; and an invoice (Mar. 1863) of W.I. Bull (William Izard Bull, 1813-1894?) to [J].B. Lafitte, listing goods such as cloth, needles, cologne, boots, saddles, and green tea. The invoice has a note (Dec. 1865) by W.B. Guerard stating that "This invoice of goods by Blockade running steamer into Charleston SC was what was sent for by Hon. Wm. Izard Bull through a shipment of bales Sea Island cotton..." Property records (mostly oversize items) include a 1737 grant (with plat) of 450 acres on the southwest side of the Santee River to Mrs. Mary Blamyer; a 1743 grant of 100 acres on the north side of the Santee River near Murray's Ferry (in present-day Williamsburg County?), to John Phipps; a lease (1750) of 450 acres, from Mary Blamyer to Edward Rawlins, who then released the land to William Vants (Vance?); a 1756 grant (fragmentary) of 200 acres on the Santee River to Thomas Hailes (Hales?); a lease (1771) of 450 acres originally granted to Mary Blamyer, Moses Vance to Col. Tacitus Gaillard; a 1774 grant (with plat) of 500 acres in St. Matthew's Parish, near land of Tacitus Gaillard, to John McWilliams; a 1777 dedimus potestatem (writ) and release of dower, Mrs. Ann Gaillard to William Bull, Jr., concerning 614 acres on the south side of the Santee River, namely a tract of "river swamp sand" which is part of an island, as well as 432 additional acres; an agreement (1777) between Robert Hales (or Hailes) and William Bull, Jr. for the sale of a plantation in St. Matthew's Parish which consists of two tracts originally granted to Thomas Hales (Hailes) and Robert Whitten; a lease (1777) of 500 acres in St. Matthew's Parish, John McWilliams to Jacob Valk; and a grant (1785) of 35 acres on the Santee River, to William Bull.
