Letters, 1777-1792, of McGillivray, outgoing, in one volume, several to the Colonial Office of Great Britain discussing attempts to use the Creeks to thwart the American Revolution in Ga., with the letter of 1783 Aug. 30 from McGillivray to Col. Brown, British Superintendent at Pensacola, Fla., of particular interest, as McGillivray discussed the British treatment of the Creeks as "cruel and unjust" when the British acquiesced in allowing Indian lands to be divided among the U.S. and Spain. There are about forty letters to the Spanish government, 1784-1791, through Gov. Miro, Gov. Zespedes, and others, many discussing business ventures with William Panton, the diplomatic effort to get the Spanish to help prevent further U.S. encroachments on Indian lands, on what the U.S. did in S.C. and in Ga. to rectify abuses against the Cherokee and Creek nations, and several letters regarding the U.S. commission to amicably settle the dispute between the Creeks and the U.S. Of special interest is the 1789 Dec. 1 letter from McGillivray to the Spanish West Florida governor, Zespedes, regarding the meeting between McGillivray and the U.S. Indian Commission on the Oconee River in 1790 Sept., and the acceptance of the U.S. treaty proposal by McGillivray, and other subjects. There is also a letter, 1792, from McGillivray to Secretary of War Henry Knox regarding the Americans in Georgia completely ignoring the treaty between the Creek nation and the U.S. There are also several letters, 1784-1789, from McGillivray to the other partners in Panton, Leslie and Co. in Pensacola, Fla., and Mobile, Ala., including William Panton, John Leslie, and Charles MacLatchy regarding relations between the Creeks, the U.S., and Spain.
