Morgan-Geer-Gallup papers, 1715-1844.

This collection is a compilation of papers from several generations of the Morgan, Geer, and Gallup families from the Norwich and New London, Connecticut areas. There was much intermarriage among the families, and the exact provenance of the material remains uncertain. The earliest piece is a pocket memorandum book attributed to John Morgan (1667- ca. 1744) and later used by his son, John Morgan (1700-1771). There are several small account books included with the collection. Two belonged to the younger John Morgan's son, Shapley Morgan (b. 1740). Entries include farm work and construction and repair of shoes. Another two account books were owned by James Lewis Geer. James Lewis Geer was the husband of Prudence Almira Gallup, niece of another account book owner, Russell Gallup. Russell Gallup married Hannah Morgan, the granddaughter of Shapley Morgan. Geographical and historical facts comprise the information in Albert A. Bailey's book from 1830. Bailey married Sally Maria Geer, sister of James Lewis Geer. Russell Gallup and James Gallup (relationship uncertain) both have surveyors's bills, dated 1824, within another notebook. The owner of the notebook is unknown. This suggests, however, that one of the two may have owned the surveyor's notebook that is also part of the collection. Another piece without an owner's name is a notebook filled with dance instructions. Names of the dances include "Scotch Air", "Washington Assembly", and "Grant's Jig". Several papers within the collection document James Lewis Geer's instruction at a local singing school. Lastly, a notebook detailing the constitution of the Ladies Sewing Society of St. James' Church, Ledyard, Connecticut lists many local names.
