Title:
Watson C. Squire papers, 1850-1973 (bulk 1850-1920)
The Watson C. Squire papers consist of biographical information, correspondence, speeches, financial records, legal documents, writings, real estate documents, reports, legislation, proclamations, clippings, and other materials that document the life of the Civil War veteran, businessman, and public servant. The papers measure 9.12 cubic feet and span the years 1850 to 1926. They include material on Squire's early years in New York, his Civil War service, political activities, and business affairs, including his work at E. Remington & Sons. Less well documented are Squire's tenures as territorial governor and U.S. senator, but there are materials from those periods on the anti-Chinese riots in Seattle and Tacoma, the Lake Washington Ship Canal, and the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The papers are arranged into subgroups, each representing a phase of Squire's career and grouped by public service, business affairs, school years, and Civil War service. There are also subgroups for Squire's personal papers and members of Squire's family, specifically, Ida Remington Squire, Orra Squire, Erretta Wheeler Squire, and members of the Remington family. Major correspondents include W.H. Grimwade, Samuel Norris, S. [Samuel] Remington, Philo Remington, E. Remington & Sons, Judge Advocate Major G.P. Thurston, Assistant Judge Advocate General William M. Dunn, Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt, Orra and Erretta Squire (Watson Squire's parents), Ida Remington Squire, and Philo Remington Squire (Watson Squire's wife and son).
