Diary covering Parkman's service in the Massachusetts provincial forces under Major-General James Abercrombie during the French and Indian War from May to Oct. 1758 on a march to Ticonderoga (N.Y.), and continuing after his return home to Westborough and Brookfield (Mass.) from Oct. 1758 to Apr. 1759. Contains brief accounts of troop movements, camp life, and skirmishes near Lake George (N.Y.) and an attempt to take Ft. Ticonderoga with resulting losses. At home Parkman describes day work undertaken (mainly carpentry, farm work) and another enlistment, not carried through.

A collection of papers relating to British colonial forces during the late eighteenth century. Included are orders, receipts for supplies, inventories, letters by officers such as Jeffery Amherst and James Abercromby and other similiar materials. A majority of the materials pertain to British forces in America during the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars. One item of particular interest is a statement showing the provisions necessary to maintain one corporal and eleven privates for one month.

Personal and official papers of Lord Loudoun accumulated during his command of British forces in America from 1756 to 1758 constitute the greater part of the collection. The bulk of the collection deals with the campaigns of 1758-1757, including the fall of Fort Oswego, Fort William Henry, and Loudoun's expedition against Louisbourg, including materials documenting Loudoun's relations with colonial authorities, institutions, and society; frontier defenses; relations with the Six Nations, Sir William Johnson and Edmond Atkin. There are also papers relating to the command of Edward Braddock (1755) and William Shirley (1755-1756) as well as Loudoun's successors James Abercromby and Jeffrey Amherst. The papers include official and personal correspondence, reports, returns of troops, ordnance, stores, accounts, orders, appointments and other documents; Loudoun's communications with the Office of the Secretary at War, Southern Department of the Office of Secretary of State, Board of Trade, as well as his letters to William Augustus, the duke of Cumberland. Correspondents include James Abercromby, William Wildman, viscount of Barrington, John Calcraft, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, William Denny, John Forbes, Henry Fox, George Montagu-Dunk, the earl of Halifax, George II, Sir Charles Hardy, Sir William Johnson, Thomas Pownall, James Prevost, WilSir William Shirley, John Stanwix, Daniel Webb, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and others.

The papers from Forbes's campaign against the French at Ft. Duquesne contain correspondence, reports about Indian allies and the colonial governments, military returns and instructions, intelligence reports and some financial papers. They concern strategy, supply, the advance across Pennsylvania, colonial cooperation, provisioning of the troops, Indian negotiations and relations with British and colonial officers. Material is present from other British campaigns in the French and Indian war, particularly the assault at Ft. Ticonderoga, the massacre at Ft. William Henry, the siege of Louisburg, and Braddock's defeat which is described in the letterbook of Sir John St.Clair, the highest ranking officer to survive.

This collection of Johnson's papers represents a significant number of Johnson's personal and business papers. The collection consists of several thousand individual documents ranging from bills and receipts to correspondence to household inventories. The collection includes materials seized by the State during the American Revolution and other materials acquired subsequently to supplement the collection. Included in this collection are correspondence, bills, accounts, records of public proceedings, official and military reports regarding Johnson as a land developer, records relating to Johnson's activities as a fur trader and his activities as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Also included are papers relating to trade with the Indians; papers relating to Johnson's activities during the French and Indian War, particularly the Battle of Lake George in 1755; the construction of Johnson's homes, Fort Johnson and Johnson Hall; the erection of public buildings for use by the county seat in Johnstown, N.Y. and other papers reflecting Johnson's role as a prominent figure on the colonial frontier. The collection also contains materials relating to Johnson's activities as a land agent for his uncle Sir Peter Warren. Johnson acted as Warren's agent shortly after his immigration to America and managed Warren's Mohawk Valley lands. The collection was badly damaged in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire. Those documents that survived were published as Johnson Papers (see publications note). A published calendar of the collection was issued prior to the fire and the absence of particular documents is easy to ascertain (see publications note). The State Library holds other papers of Johnson and his family which are cataloged separately.
