Squier, E. G. (Ephraim George), 1821-1888. Papers, 1838-1905.

Title: Papers, 1838-1905.

Correspondence, printed articles, transcripts, clippings, notebooks, and scrapbooks. The correspondence, 1842-1905, is mostly to Squier. Correspondents include Francis Parkman, David Dixon Porter, and Joseph Henry. There is also diplomatic correspondence, some in Spanish, and letters to and from Squier's nephew Frank Squier. Printed articles include copies of Squier's contributions to the ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA on Central and South American topics, and there is material from the Honduras Interoceanic Railway Company. Scrapbooks and notebooks include an 1839 diary; Squier's poems; reviews of his work; archaeological writings, apparently copied from other sources; and the 1849 charter of a company to build a canal across Nicaragua. There are also drawings and maps of archaeological sites in Central America. The microfilm contains a listing of correspondence, biographical material, and correspondence.

Title: William J. Benners Papers 1850-1940 (Bulk 1880-1920)

William J. Benners, (1863-1940), was a writer, publisher, and historian of dime novels, a class of popular fiction that flourished in the mid to late nineteenth century and into the early twentieth. The William J. Benners Papers consist of letters to Benners from family members, various authors, and publishers, fragments of dime novel manuscripts, several research and accounting notebooks, and miscellany such as scrapbooks and photos. The collection includes material on and belonging to Benners gathered by Ralph Adimari during Adimari's extensive research on the history of the dime novel. It also includes some personal papers of dime novel authors Charles Garvice and Emma A. B. Sharkey (pseud. Mrs. E. Burke Collins), and publisher Frank Tousey.
