Also, copies of Sir Ralph Winwood's papers when principal secretary of state, 1614-1617, with a few from an earlier and a later date, as well as many petitions; letters of recommendation; letters to and from envoys and agents in Spain, Savoy, Venice, Turkey, the Netherlands (one of 1617 mentions [Hugo] Grotius), Belgium, France, the county Palatine and Portugal; several letters from the lords-deputy of Ireland, Sir Edward Coke, Sir Tobie Matthew, Sir Thomas Smith, and Sir William Monson; two letters to Sir Walter Raleigh, one about a debt claimed by Peter Frobisher in right of his uncle, Captain Frobisher, and Raleigh's proposal for his last voyage to Guiana, [1614?]; a letter from Dr. Thomas Lodge and another discussing a debt owing to him; a letter and petition of Dr. William Fulke's daughter relating to her right to print his books; a copy of the French king's edict, January 1607, for drawing certain makers of tapestry from the Low Countries into France and Sir Francis Crane's proposal for a similar undertaking in England. Date range found in volume: 1607 on leaf 55v and 1625 on leaf 115v.

Bagot family. Papers of the Bagot family of Blithfield, Staffordshire [manuscript], 1428-1671 (bulk 1557-1671).

Title: Papers of the Bagot family of Blithfield, Staffordshire [manuscript], 1428-1671 (bulk 1557-1671).

Primarily autograph letters signed, dating from 1557-1671, especially of Richard Bagot and of his son Walter. They are letters to them, letters from them (some of them drafts written on blank parts of letters addressed to them) and copies made by them of letters addressed to others, especially of official letters. The letters cover a wide range of topics and amply illustrate the life of a prosperous county family the multifarious duties it members were called upon to perform for the Crown. Also included are documents, dating from 1428-1662, concerning recusants, a form of the oath of supremacy (L.a.1044), a few deeds, specifications for two buildings (L.a.1070) and other papers. Topics of letters include: news of the wars on the Continent, of Ireland, of Frobisher's first voyage to America in 1576 (L.a.987), and of parliamentary elections. One from Richard Broughton to his father-in-law Richard Bagot discusses parliamentary procedure (L.a.269). Several discuss certain glass and iron works, and one (L.a.75) contains an inventory of equipment at the Cannock iron works. A number were written at Oxford when their writers were students; two (L.a.53, L.a.58) are some of Sir Harvey Bagot's Latin exercises. Both these exercises, and five others (L.a.571, 573, 581, 605 and 992) contain poems.
