Haydon, Benjamin Robert, 1786-1846. Papers, 1808-1888.

Title: Papers, 1808-1888.

Consists chiefly of Haydon's diaries in 30 volumes, a notebook, genealogical scrapbook, and an incomplete autobiography. There are also nearly 2,000 letters to and from Haydon, most of which he pasted onto the leaves of the diary. Correspondents include Sir George Howland Beaumont, Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, Earl Grey, William Richard Hamilton, Viscount Melbourne, Sir Robert Peel, the Duke of Sutherland, the Duke of Wellington, and Sir David Wilkie. Also contains drawings by Haydon, including portraits of John Keats and William Wordsworth.

Holograph journal in two versions (original and fair copy) of a tour from London to Naples and return via Switzerland, Germany and the Low Countries made by the Hincks brothers between March 29th and December 8th, 1823. The brothers spent extended periods in Naples, Rome, Florence and Vienna; the journal records their sightseeing, their opinions of works of art and architecture, and the daily events of travel. Supplied with an introduction to William Richard Hamilton, the English ambassador and antiquary, they remained in Naples for three weeks, attending concerts, balls, and conversazioni, exploring the local antiquities, and climbing Vesuvius. Following their departure from Naples they spent a month in Rome, visiting museums, galleries, and the studios of Canova and Thorvaldsen; returned to Florence, where they met William Etty copying a Titian at the Uffizi; marveled at the new Simplon Road into Switzerland; and returned to England via Vienna and the Low Countries. Original annotated on front pastedown with title and note: "note upon the above (made on the day below written) Given to me by me (sic) dearest brother John Hincks, now no more.' T. C. Hincks, August 12, 1844." Fair copy contains tipped-in portrait engraving of Francis Joseph Charles, Duc de Reichstadt, and laid-in advertising card for the hotel of Pooters and Decoster, Amsterdam.

William John Hamilton (1805-1867) English geologist and eldest son of the famed antiquarian and purchaser of the Rosetta Stone, William Richard Hamilton (1777-1859), studied at the University of Goettingen from 1825-1827. The Hamilton Papers consists principally of correspondence written by William John Hamilton to his parents, reflecting the young geologist's intellectual development, his course of study, student life, and holiday travels. Arranged chronologically, the letters mirror the political and cultural events of the period.

The Stereograph Collection consists of images of a wide range of subjects in a variety of stereographic formats, made by numerous and varied photographers and publishers, some of which are unidentified. The vast majority of these stereographs are traditional, albumen or gelatin silver prints mounted on cards (several albumen prints mounted in cardboard stereo frames, with hand colored tissue paper backing), issued in series by publisher or photographer from the 1860s through the 1930s, many with captions or explanations handwritten or printed on mount verso. A relative few are hand colored on salted paper, color photomechanical prints, collodion or gelatin silver glass transparencies, daguerreotypes, collotypes, cyanotypes, or color diapositive "kromograms." Subjects include: tourist or documentary views of London, Paris, Rome, Wales, Scotland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Arkansas, New Mexico, New York City, Niagara Falls, Texas, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Royal Gorge, Egypt, Palestine, Jerusalem, Constantinople (now Istanbul), eastern Africa, India, China, and Japan; portraits of prominent people, including two U.S. Presidents, the Prince of Wales, two Japanese government officials, various Native American chiefs, an actress, a writer, and others; "genre views" of people engaged in scenes of everyday life, some staged and humorous; documentaries of various exhibitions and permanent displays in places such as the Louvre, the Vatican, and the Palace at Versailles; documentation of the Boer War in South Africa and of the devastation in France at the end of World War I; miscellaneous other subjects such as political rallies, animals, cemeteries, works of art (primarily sculpture), still life compositions, and "ghost" or "spirit" photographs. Of particular interest are: Warren De La Rue's stereoscopic views of the moon, in paper and glass format; a glass stereograph of Michelangelo's statue of Moses, with exceptional three dimensional effect; views of the ruins of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham after the fire in 1936; Alfred Silvester's series "The Hero's Wife"; W.I. Chadwick's "trick" photograph of two images of the same woman, entitled "My Wife and My Better Half"; and several examples of French tissue stereographs, especially the "Diables" from the famous series "Journey in Hell." Also included are: a set of "kromograms," examples of F.E. Ives' early color process using three copies of an image photographed with different colored filters and viewed through a specially designed "kromskop"; and two sets of Holmes' stereoscopic diagrams (probably wood engravings, not photographic), said to have been published in the Illustrated London News in July 1852.
