Bulk of collection consists of approx. 2,600 letters chiefly between family members. Letters discuss family, friends and home life, reflecting the social environment of relatively well-to-do Quaker families: letters of Mary Cope (1766-1825) to her children at Westtown Boarding School contain spiritual and practical advice; also letters from school by Henry, Francis and William D. Cope to parents; later letters of brothers Henry, Alfred and William D. Cope discuss family shipping firm begun by father Thomas P. Cope and family land interests in Susquehanna County (Pa.); letters of sisters Clementine, Caroline and Annette Cope include travel letters from Europe, Clementine Cope's letters also include those written while teaching at a Freedmen's Association School in Baltimore (1865). Letters of Francis R. Cope (1821-1909) and Thomas P. Cope (1823-1900) while at Haverford College (1835-1838); letters of Anna S. and Francis R. Cope discuss home life, children, family and friends' activities; letters of Francis R. Cope also discuss his travel in Virginia after the Civil War (1866) for Freedmen's Relief Association; letters of Elizabeth S. The Cope diaries exist in three forms. The first is the original manuscripts in 8 volumes. The second is a typescript abridgement made by a descendant, Mrs. George Emlen, and the third is a second, different abridgement edited by Eliza Cope Harrison and published as PHILADELPHIA MERCHANT: THE DIARY OF THOMAS P. COPE (South Bend, Ind.: 1978). Both the original manuscript and the Emlen typescript are in the Quaker Collection of the Haverford College Library.

Letters, legal, business and financial papers, accounts, minutes, diary, portraits and other papers chiefly related to the Cope family of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Papers of Thomas Pym Cope (1768-1854) relate to business and civic interests in Philadelphia (Poor laws, public schools, public water, first bridge over the Schuylkill, etc.); papers (1816-1823) related to Philadelphia Yearly Meeting committee aiding German Separatists led by Joseph M. Bimeler (Bäumler); letters and documents related to legal aspects of the Separation of 1827-1828 within Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. Letters (1799-1847) to Cope from Friends and others discuss slavery and immigration of free blacks to Haiti, the War of 1812, business conditions, etc. Papers of Alfred Cope (1806-1875) include minutes and accounts related to disbursement of money to Menominee Indians (1849); papers of Philip C. Garrett (1834-1905) discuss formation of Haverford College Alumni Association (1857), also his diary while at Haverford (1851); letters (1854-1857) of Thomas Garrett (1789-1871) discuss his work assisting fleeing slaves. Letters to Thomas Pim Cope while he was in Europe (1858) related to ship "Tuscarora," also letters from family and friends while he was on a religious journey in Great Britain and France with Samuel Morris in 1890; seven letters (1890-1891) of Alban Cope while a patient at New York State Lunatic Asylum (Utica) and Hartford Retreat; letters (1890) of Elizabeth W. Cope to her husband Thomas Pim Cope discuss family matters, including son Alban; letter (1864) of J.M. M'Kim discusses freedmen; letters of William Drinker Cope discuss land and business matters; other correspondents in collection include Abigail Barker, Moses Brown, Francis R. Cope, Henry Cope, John S. Cope, Margaret Cope, Walter Cope, Thomas Eddy, James Milnor, Inazō Nitobe and others.

Title: Letterbooks, 1788-1853 [microform].

The records consist of a microfilm of four volumes of letterbooks containing Cope's outbound correspondence from December 1788 to May 1853. The quantity of letters decreases markedly after 1835, as Cope relinquishes most of the details of business to his sons. Cope kept no diary between 1820 and 1843, and the letters are the primary source on his life and career during this period.

Title: Woodbourne Orchards and family of Francis R. Cope Jr. , 1848-1997.

Papers of the Cope family whose members descended from or were forebears of Francis R. Cope Jr. (1878-1962). The bulk of the papers was created by Francis R. Cope Jr., his daughter, Theodora Morris Cope and her first husband, John Frederick Stanwell-Fletcher. Other principal writers in the collection are Alexis T. Cope, Agnes Cope, Anna S. Cope, Caroline Cope, Clementine Cope, Elizabeth S. Cope, and Evelyn Cope, all from the 19th and 20th century. Some portion of the papers relate to Woodbourne Orchards in Dimock, PA, a homestead established by Alexis Cope, but brought into full fruit through the efforts of Francis Cope, Jr. Some materials of the Evans, Foote, Morris and Scull families are represented here as well. Among the papers is a great deal of correspondence and diaries, along with other materials.
