Haskett Family Photograph Collection, 1897-1943

Title: Haskett Family Photograph Collection 1897-1943

The Haskett Collection contains family papers, correspondence, photographs, postcards, scrapbooks, slides, blueprints, and ephemera. Varying widely in their subjects and unified by their passing to Jon Haskett. These documents pertain to the past three generations of the Haskett and Baker families. The families both arrived in California in the late 19th century and were united by the marriage of Clara Beymer Baker to William Blair Haskett, both of Pasadena, California. The materials in the collection date from 1861 to 1928, with the bulk of the collection between 1880 and 1919.Of noted interest is the variety of nineteenth and early twentieth century photography found in the collection, including southwestern U.S. views, portraits of American Indians, European stereoscopic views, and Matthew Brady’s Civil War Generals carte de visite set.

The Stereograph File consists of materials published in the stereographic form, which when seen through a viewer gives the impression of being a three dimensional representation. The bulk of the collection consists of paper stereographs (which range in size from 3 1/8 x 6 3/4 inches to 4 x 7 inches) published between 1860-1900, including albumen and silver gelatin prints. There are also early glass stereographs, tissue stereographs, tintypes, and photomechanically produced views. The views were acquired from a variety of sources over the last 130 years and represent of the work of a large variety of photographers and publishers. Most of the collection depicts identifiable locations or subject matter. There are also views that were staged in a dramatic fashion to tell or story or convey emotional content.

The Stereograph Collection consists of images of a wide range of subjects in a variety of stereographic formats, made by numerous and varied photographers and publishers, some of which are unidentified. The vast majority of these stereographs are traditional, albumen or gelatin silver prints mounted on cards (several albumen prints mounted in cardboard stereo frames, with hand colored tissue paper backing), issued in series by publisher or photographer from the 1860s through the 1930s, many with captions or explanations handwritten or printed on mount verso. A relative few are hand colored on salted paper, color photomechanical prints, collodion or gelatin silver glass transparencies, daguerreotypes, collotypes, cyanotypes, or color diapositive "kromograms." Subjects include: tourist or documentary views of London, Paris, Rome, Wales, Scotland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Arkansas, New Mexico, New York City, Niagara Falls, Texas, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Royal Gorge, Egypt, Palestine, Jerusalem, Constantinople (now Istanbul), eastern Africa, India, China, and Japan; portraits of prominent people, including two U.S. Presidents, the Prince of Wales, two Japanese government officials, various Native American chiefs, an actress, a writer, and others; "genre views" of people engaged in scenes of everyday life, some staged and humorous; documentaries of various exhibitions and permanent displays in places such as the Louvre, the Vatican, and the Palace at Versailles; documentation of the Boer War in South Africa and of the devastation in France at the end of World War I; miscellaneous other subjects such as political rallies, animals, cemeteries, works of art (primarily sculpture), still life compositions, and "ghost" or "spirit" photographs. Of particular interest are: Warren De La Rue's stereoscopic views of the moon, in paper and glass format; a glass stereograph of Michelangelo's statue of Moses, with exceptional three dimensional effect; views of the ruins of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham after the fire in 1936; Alfred Silvester's series "The Hero's Wife"; W.I. Chadwick's "trick" photograph of two images of the same woman, entitled "My Wife and My Better Half"; and several examples of French tissue stereographs, especially the "Diables" from the famous series "Journey in Hell." Also included are: a set of "kromograms," examples of F.E. Ives' early color process using three copies of an image photographed with different colored filters and viewed through a specially designed "kromskop"; and two sets of Holmes' stereoscopic diagrams (probably wood engravings, not photographic), said to have been published in the Illustrated London News in July 1852. Kilburn, Kilburn Brothers, Horatio Nelson King, E. Lamy, M. Léon & J. Lévy, Loescher & Petsch, London Stereoscopic and Photographic Co., Negretti & Zambra, Timothy O'Sullivan, H. Petschler & Co., "Phiz" (pseud. of Hablot Knight Browne), J. Quéval, William H. Rau, Jules Richard, Charles Piazzi Smyth, John P. Soule, Underwood & Underwood, H.C. White, Ben Wittick, and many, many others. Daguerreotype artists represented are: Richard Beard, Antoine Claudet, William Keith, William E. Kilburn, J.E. Mayall, and T.R. Williams.
