The bulk of these papers consist of grocery and general merchandise daybooks, cashbooks, customers' ledgers, inventories, order books, checkbooks and other accounts (80 v., 1851-1854, 1872-1916) mainly of Hammond Brothers (John and Thomas), the Hammond Store, and [E.J.] Barker and [Wallace] Wyman, successors (1871) to the Hammonds; also cashbooks, payroll records and board bills for furnace, furnace store, and company railroad employees, canal and lake steamer shipping accounts, and journals (7 v., 1858-1880) of the Crown Point Iron Company; accounts for the furnace company store, which include daybooks, customers' ledgers, and a cashbook (11 v., 1874-1886); miscellaneous accounts (11 v., 1847-1889) of Hammond & Company, Charles Franklin Hammond, the Sugar Hill Company, and others; bankbooks (10 v., 1835-1866) and checkbook stubs (13 v., 1855-1883), covering accounts which C. F. Hammond and Hammond & Company had with banks in Whitehall and Troy; and one daybook of Allen Penfield (1845-1861). In addition to bound account books, the papers also include correspondence, financial statements, orders, invoices, vouchers, board and freight bills, boat operation receipts, general store bills and receipts, and memoranda notebooks. Title: Account book, 1827-1829, 1864.

Records debits and credits accrued by a carpenter for such activities as making capitols for houses, varnishing furniture, repairing a light stand, work on wagons, finishing rooms in a house, partitioning a shop, making a sleigh, building doors and window frames, making handles for tools, and haying. Furniture forms represented include desks, bookcases, tables, cupboards, stools, and shelves. Customers paid in farm produce and ork services, including painting and varnishing. References are made to buying tools, wood, and other supplies needed for business. Someone named Mudge worked for the carpenter and a record of lost time for 1829 was kept. Mudge's name appears in several of the entries. Many of the accounts were settled by T.F. Hammond, estate administrator, after September, 1829. The volume was used in 1864 to document auction sales of Thomas F. Hammond in West Windsor, Vt. A variety of household items and their selling prices are listed.

Family, business and legal papers of various members of the Hammond family of Frederick Co., Md. The earliest items are land grants and other land records of Nathan Hammond and Vachel Hammond. The papers of Thomas Hammond, who served as a judge of the Orphans' Court of Frederick Co., are mainly the records of his service as administrator of several estates or as guardian of orphans, but also include farm records and slave purchases. The papers of Dawson V. Hammond, brother of Thomas, concern the administration of estates, including Thomas's. Other subjects mentioned include Unionist sympathies in Maryland during the Civil War and economic conditions in the U.S. during the 1870s.
