Documents, letters, clippings, manuscripts, and bound manuscripts documenting the history and administration of the French government and the French army from 1788-1815, with a few earlier or later items ranging in date from 1668-1868. Government documents and related items include official letters of complaint written to the king by the nobles of Brittany and by the three estates in the Dauphiné province in 1788; minutes of meetings of the Assemblée Nationale Constituante from 1790-1791; two manuscript drafts of Gracchus Babeuf's Cadastre Perpetuel, dated 1789; decrees and minutes of meetings by the Convention Nationale, 1792-1795; letters from individual citizens to various government officials petitioning for restoration of positions, personal property, or pensions lost during the Revolution; passports; and letters to and from various government bodies, especially the Ministère des Finances, Ministère de la Guerre, Conseil d'Etat, Directoire Exécutif, Garde Nationale, Département de la Seine, Convention Nationale, and local surveillance committees, on financial, administrative, and political matters. Financial documents include statements specifying architectural repairs done in 1789 and their cost; an 1805 letter from French printer Firmin Didot presenting his terms for printing official government stamps and seals; and documents on financial and administrative affairs of the Catholic Church in France. Military documents include service records, discharges, brevets, orders, commissions, and documents listing army rations and pay, dating from ca. 1790-1815, including an 1815 report on French cavalry listing troop strengths by regiment. Also included is correspondence among army and navy officers detailing problems, plans, and recommendations concerning supplies, personnel, troop movements, desertion, and finances. In addition, the collection includes a few letters by artists and writers from this period through 1868, including Jacques-Louis David and Victor Hugo. Includes a French coin, dated 1792. Correspondents, authors, and signees include Gracchus Babeuf; Jean Sylvain Bailly; Jacques Pierre Brissot de Warville; comte Mathieu Dumas; Charles François Du Périer Dumouriez; Jérôme Bonaparte, King of Westphalia; Louis de Fontanes; Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert Du Motier, marquis de Lafayette; Bernard René Jourdan, marquis de Launay; comte Augustin Lespinasse; Metternich; Charles Pichegru; comte Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès; and many other lesser-known but important figures of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods. Also included are individual documents signed by Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon I, and Louis XVIII.
