Miscellaneous letters and paper of Marmaduke Hamilton and members of his family relating primarily to his business as a dry goods and commission merchant and to politics. The collection contains legal papers including deeds of sale for slaves, land deeds and land grants. Correspondence includes a letter from Hamilton to Alexander H. Stephens, 1882, concerning an appointment to the Georgia Railroad Commission; an unsigned letter to Thomas A. Edison on the construction of an artificial ear; and a letter to Hamilton notifying him of his appointment as a deputy collector of internal revenue in Georgia. Miscellaneous material includes invitations, Civil War cavalry orders, phrenological analysis of Hamilton, and handbills for a local election, 1885. Volumes consist of letter books of John F. Hamilton and Marmaduke Hamilton; a brief diary and daybook of John Hamilton; daybooks and ledgers; and a records book of Everhard Hamilton's slaves.
