The papers of General John Cadwalader include material on the Trenton-Princeton campaign; letters of George Washington, 1776-1778; Cadwalader's memorandum book, 1776-1777; letters of Thomas Wharton; documents relating to the Cadwalader-Reed controversy; James McHenry letters, 1781; an Alexander Hamilton letter, 1783; revolutionary matters; family papers; papers of Cadwalader Evans, 1735, and Joseph Rose, 1737; and an account book. The correspondence of General Thomas Cadwalader is broad in scope and embraces letters of many prominent persons. It is rich in family letters and contains material on the Port Folio, the Assembly, clubs, etc. Included are letter books, 1812-1840. His military papers relate mainly to the War of 1812, covering the services of Philadelphia troops, August to December, 1814. In 1817 he took over the management of the Penn family affairs in America. Material collected by earlier agents was placed in his hands. This included many of William Penn's own files on the lower counties, as well as manuscripts collected later to substantiate Penn's claims. Many of the Penn family's original deeds relating to their interests in Pennsylvania are included here, as well as agreements for the Mason-Dixon surveys. The coverage of the Penn agency is very broad. Included in it is voluminous correspondence of the Penns starting with Thomas Penn. Many drafts, surveys, and maps are in the collection. Another large category of General Thomas Cadwalader's papers reflects his career as a lawyer. Richest of all the material preserved here are the George Croghan papers, 1744-1782. These papers deal with Croghan's life as Indian trader, Indian agent, and land speculator. They include a number of his journals, and letters from Sir William Johnson, the Franklins, Gates, Gage, Monckton, Trent, the Whartons, Lord Dunmore and many soldiers and traders of the frontier. Many other cases dealing with the affairs of prominent persons and concerns of General Cadwalader's times are included, notably those concerning the American Iron Company and the West Jersey Society. Judge John Cadwalader's papers relate principally to the law cases he handled prior to his elevation to the bench. In addition, there is material of interest relating to President Buchanan. Present also are Judge Cadwalder's letter books, 1830-1859. Phineas Bond, the British Consul, is represented by papers, much of biographical interest, revolutionary material primarily relating to the affairs of Judge William Moore of Moore Hall, as well as many law cases. Bond represented English concerns having interests in this country. Many of these cases he passed on to his nephew, General Thomas Cadwalader. General George Cadwalader's papers furnish information on military subjects, 1834-1865, are rich in militia affairs, include information on the "Awful Riots of 1844," day-by-day coverage of the Mexican War, and much excellent Civil War material. His interests as a sportsman in yachting and duck shooting are well represented, as are his extensive farming and cattle-raising activities in Maryland. Business interests include papers relating to the Baltimore and Philadelphia Steamboat Company, 1840-1878; estate papers, many inherited from his father, General Thomas Cadwalader; and railroad and mining interests. Dr. Charles E. Cadwalader's papers consist principally of extensive historical and genealogical notes on the Cadwalader and allied families, as well as photographs of family portraits, relatives, and family houses. Among certain miscellaneous items not included in the above items are account books of John Moore, 1710-1717; John Kearsley, 1711-1720; John Cadwalader, 1711-1724; Patient Usher, 1737-1741; Dr. Phineas Bond, 1758-1759, 1762-1769; and Dr. Thomas Cadwalader, 1767-1768.

Burd-Shippen Papers, 1708-1792

James Burd (1726-1793) was well-known in colonial Pennsylvania through his role in the French and Indian War, as well as his connections to many of the colony's leading families (most notably the Shippen family). Initially starting out as a merchant in Philadelphia, Burd became increasingly involved with colonial affairs after moving to Lancaster County with his family in 1752. It would be on the frontier where Burd would make his mark first as a soldier, and later as a magistrate. The Burd-Shippen Papers consist mainly of letters and business documents sent to James Burd, with the bulk of the collection relating to the French and Indian War, 1754-1763, in which Burd served as an officer commanding troops at Fort Augusta and elsewhere. The 2.5 linear feet in the collection reflects all aspects of Burd's life in Pennsylvania as a merchant, soldier, and magistrate; as well as his involvement with the Shippen family professionally and personally. Intermixed with items sent to Burd are receipts to his wife Sarah Shippen Burd, and correspondence between Edward Shippen and James Hamilton regarding land matters and Indian affairs in Lancaster.

Strickland, William, Sir, 1753-1834. Papers, 1793-1827.

Papers, 1793-1827. They consist of three notebooks; two printed almanacs, one for 1794 printed in London and one for 1795 printed in Philadelphia, both with a few brief manuscript notes on his travels; a bank book for Strickland's account with the Bank of New York, 1794-1795; and about 60 letters to and from Strickland. One notebook, with the cover title American Correspondence, functions as a letter book for 1797-1801, containing lengthy abstracts of letters sent, mostly to Miles Smith, Phineas Bond, William Seton, and John Guillemard, with single letters to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Bartram, John Murray, and others. The letters discuss the war between England and France, the rebellion of 1798 in Ireland, speculation about the destination of the French fleet in 1798-1799, exchange of plants, seed, and produce, the death of Washington, and personal matters. The other two notebooks contain information about places in the United States, copied from his reading. The correspondence consists of letters to Strickland from Miles Smith and other members of his family, and a group of letters to the Rev. John Robinson from Strickland and others, including a copy of a letter from John Guillemard to Strickland, describing Native American life. Miles Smith, a Yorkshireman who accompanied Strickland on his voyage to America in 1794 and settled near Amboy (N.J.), writes about family and political matters, including the War of 1812, and conditions in the United States. A letter from his son, Miles C. Smith, describes a trip to Illinois and Indiana in 1819, and two letters from another son, Hatfield Smith, describe a voyage to Chile in 1822. The Robinson correspondence includes a letter from William Day, a former servant of Strickland's, describing his experiences after emigrating to America in 1822; it also contains letters from Strickland to Robinson, written during his American travels, and letters to Robinson from other people, including Christopher Wyvill (one letter from him is dated 1783), C.S. Duncombe, W. Mason, and others, discussing politics at Yorkshire and national levels, mainly during the 1790s. The papers also contian a copy of the York Chronicle for May 21, 1801.

The records consist of a microfilm of four volumes of letterbooks containing Cope's outbound correspondence from December 1788 to May 1853. The quantity of letters decreases markedly after 1835, as Cope relinquishes most of the details of business to his sons. Cope kept no diary between 1820 and 1843, and the letters are the primary source on his life and career during this period.
