Scattered accounts, estate papers, and correspondence of the Allen family and related Graves family of Madison County, Va. Papers of George H. Allen (1773?-1864) include detailed accounts, 1824-1859, with blacksmiths Michael Wallace and Benjamin G. Wilhoit for the same. Also, include accounts, 1835-1840, of Allen as an agent for the Madison County Poor House, reflecting purchases of food, furniture, and other supplies as well as services for repairs to equipment and the building of coffins and digging of graves. Materials relating to George's son Thomas J. Allen include scattered correspondence, 1842-1887; accounts, 1843-1859; and miscellany. Correspondence includes two items concerning a lawsuit between Allen, his wife Rebecca (Beidler) Graves Allen, and others, as defendents, and W. Burnett concerning money owed to children [perhaps as part of an estate]. Accounts concern the grinding of wheat, the purchase of shoes for family and slaves, and the payment of debts. Correspondence, 1884-1898, of Thomas's daughter Mary Albert "Abbie" Allen consist of letters from sister-in-law Mary "Mollie" Allen (of Washington, D.C., giving news of the George H. Allen (b. 1854) family, and of friends discussing social news. Of particular interest is a letter from [Sallie] M. Robey of Harriston, Augusta County, Va., recounting events of her life, including marriage, widowhood, and living with her mother and sister. Scatted items relating to members of the Graves include accounts, 1830 and 1839, of Abraham Graves (concerning corn, flour, tailoring, the payment of a debt, and stud fees; the 1839 account is annotated as paid in 1840 by Rebecca (Beidler) Graves, Abraham's widow and executrix); accounts, 1829 and 1831, and memorandum, 1832, concerning the estate of Edward Graves (1746-1831?); and orders, 1839, of James P. Sims and wife Anna (Graves) Beasley Sims, John W. Snyder and wife Judith (Graves) Snyder, and Adam Wilhoit and wife Jane (Graves) Wilhoit, authorizing brothers Abraham and Paschal Graves, and William P. Dulaney to receive shares of the estate of John Graves, dec'd.
