The Jack Schaefer Papers include his original manuscripts of novels, short stories, and scripts. Newspaper publications include over five hundred editorials, primarily from Schaefer's early journalism career in the 1930s with The New Haven "Courier Journal" and Norfolk "Virginian-Pilot", and hundreds of newspaper reviews of Schaefer's works in print and in film. American and foreign editions of his books and magazines with his articles or short stories provide examples of the diversity of Schaefer's publications. Personal and biographical materials include memorabilia and photographs of Schaefer, friends and business acquaintances, plus stills of films and plays for television. Several clippings about Schaefer works are also part of the biographical papers. Correspondence reflects Schaefer's relationship with book and magazine publishers, film producers, and fans.

The collection contains files S-V of Jaffe's editorial correspondence. Topics include Jaffe's article on Al Smith for the Virginia Quarterly Review, Norfolk civic issues including the establishment of Seashore State Park, the selection of a post office site, a history of the city, and the founding of a branch of the Virginia State College for Negroes. Among the correspondents are Jack W. Schaefer, Fred O. Seibel, John H. Small, Alfred E. Smith, Forrest B. Smith, Henry Louis Smith, Claude A. Swanson, Earl Gregg Swem, Will Orton Tewson, Emma Gray Trigg, Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy, Pierre Troubetzkoy, and Henry St. George Tucker. Also included as correspondents were S. Heth Tyler, Dorothy Thompson (form letter), E. Lee Trinkle, I. Walke Truxtun, William M. Tuck, Robert B. Tunstall, Beverley D. Tucker, Virginia Hunter Tunstall, and George S. Viereck. There is also mention of the role of the Southern Regional Council, city manager form of government, a successor to President E.A. Alderman at the University of Virginia, and the 1921 gubernatorial campaigns of E. Lee Trinkle and Henry St. George Tucker.

Title: Jack Schaefer Papers, 1920-1968.

This collection consists of correspondence between author Jack Schaefer and librarian Arthur DeVolder at Zimmerman Library, University of New Mexico regarding research materials used as background information for Schaefer's western stories and other writings. The majority of these letters concern background research regarding writer Mary Hunter Austin. However, in other letters, Schaefer requests information and articles regarding icons of pioneer life in the West such as Montague Stevens, Adolph Bandelier, Thomas James Smith of Abilene, and John Chisum for his book, Heroes without glory: some goodmen of the Old West. He also requests information on Snowshoe Thompson, Dr. Valentine T. McGillycuddy, and western ranchmen, in general, as well as the cattle trade of the West. Among his requests are the early stories of Wilbur Daniel Steele and information regarding horses in America (the latter was likely used for his book The Great Endurance Horse Race). His requests for medieval bestiaries alludes to his later work An American bestiary. Other letters are more specific, with regard to Schaefer's novels. In one letter, he reports on the status of his book Monte Walsh, then in its third printing. In another, he reminisces about Shane, first published in short story form in Argosy magazine, with Schaefer's last name misspelled. In yet another, he laments having called off a movie deal for Monte Walsh due to the screenplay's changes in the protagonist. Jack Schaefer was known for his "impeccable research." Indeed, this collection sheds light on what Schaefer was interested in while he was writing as well as some of the background sources he used for his publications.
