Papers, 177?-1867, of the McLaughlin and Redd families of Caroline County, Va. include personal letters, wills, and estate records. Early correspondence mentions British barges in the Chesapeake Bay, 1782; trips to Virginia hot springs, 1814; a dentist's visit; and the Caroline County Militia. Civil War correspondence includes a note from a N.Y. Cavalry captain regarding seizure of contraband, and a brief mention of Stonewall Jackson's funeral. A letter, 1867, from J. M. Haggerty of Galveston, Texas, to Samuel Redd, relates Civil War experiences: being wounded near Gettysburg, capture and imprisonment in the North, Fort Delaware; service under General John Bell Hood; and postwar business ventures in Texas. Wills and probate records concern distribution of property and slaves. The will, 1834, of Lucy A. Coleman, frees her slaves on the condition that they go to Liberia. If they choose not to go they will be sold and the money given to the American Colonization Society. Family members are to be purchased, freed and sent also, if purchase price not high. Other bequests include monetary sums to female family members, friends, the Bible Society of Virginia, and the Burman Mission. A leather wallet, owned by Barbara Minor, deceased 1778, is included.
