The memoirs of this Albemarle County, Va., Confederate soldier describe his service with James McDowell Carrington's Company Virginia Light Artillery (Charlottesville Artillery) and in Company D, 46th Virginia Regiment. Carrington relates anecdotes about a black barber in the battery, McDowell, an iliterate mountaineer, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, describes fights at Port Republic (Cross Keys), Malvern Field, Chancellorsville, Petersburg and White Oak Road and includes the transcript of a letter 1896 August 19, from Jedediah Hotchkiss.

Carrington as representative for state held stock in the Roanoke Navigation Company, recommending a canal be built between Danville, Va., and Weldon, N.C.
