The collection includes William Ball's "Merchandise Journal," Elizabeth Byles Ball's recipe book, an inventory of William's estate, bills of sale for slaves, some genealogical material about the Ball family, miscellaneous notes and correspondence about Ball, and some information about the Baltimore silversmith also named William Ball. The merchandise journal, which covers 1759-1762, records the sales of a wide variety of goods, including textile fabrics, buttons and buckles, dress accessories, tools, watches, snuff boxes, some silver and jewelry, pencils, and a wide variety of other items. Many of these goods were purchased in large quantities, by the gross or dozen. There are two bills of sale for slaves, both for boys aged about fourteen, one named Tom and the other Anthony (but originally named Tom). There inventory taken of Ball's estate following his death in 1810 includes furniture, books, bedding, silver pieces, jewelry, farming "utensils," and pewter and silversmithing tools. Values for the items are listed. Elizabeth Byles [later Ball] began her book in 1759. She recorded some hymns and poems, but the bulk of the contents are recipes, and most of these are for medicines. Sometimes she noted from whom she collected the recipe. As well, there are recipes for food and drink. One of the poems is about the minister George Whitefield.
