Title: Al Emmett Fostell Papers, 1879-1920.

Consists of letters, playbills and programs, clippings, stationery, and ephemera documenting the careers of Al, Florence, and Gilberta Fostell, as well as the personal interests of the family patriarch. The Fostell Family series contains material relating to each of the Fostells in their capacities as entertainers, managers, or entrepreneurs, as well as material of a personal nature collected by Al Fostell. Detailed catalogs of Fostell's exhibitions are included in the Dime Museum subseries, and the Personal subseries includes a brief autobiographical sketch and photographs of Fostell with family and friends. Series II. Fostell the Collector contains letters, clippings, programs, and ephemera relating to twenty-five performers and ensembles, most of whom were minstrel show or variety performers. Correspondents include Joseph Fox and William H. Ward of Fox and Ward and the variety performer Major Burk. Other materials relate to the deaths of Frank Dumont and George H. Primrose; the musical comedy Hello, Alexander! in which McIntyre and Heath starred; Abraham Lincoln's assassination; and Hughey Dougherty.
