Title: Calvin Jones Papers (#921) 1783-1929, 2000

Calvin Jones, who moved to Smithfield, N.C., in 1795, was a physician; officer in the North Carolina militia; editor of the a Raleigh, N.C., newspaper; and owner of a plantation near Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tenn., to which he moved his family in 1832. His son, Montezuma Jones, ran the plantation upon his father's death. His grandson, James W. Jones, was an attorney and member of the Tennessee legislature. Correspondence, financial and legal papers, writings, pictures, and other materials of Calvin Jones and other Jones family members. Correspondence includes letters relating to land sales, medicine, and military business around the War of 1812. The establishment of the University of North Carolina is discussed in 1801 letters. Correspondents include N.C. governor Benjamin Williams; Joseph Caldwell, president of UNC; Davy Crockett; Benjamin Rush; and James Madison. There is also a one-page address, 1798, by John Adams; Jones's travel diaries from trips to Washington, D.C., 1815; the old southwest, 1818; and Europe, 1844; and a farm journal in which he described agricultural experiments. Papers, 1847-1879, chiefly relate to Montezuma Jones and include financial documents about the Tennessee cotton trade, particularly land sales and dealings with cotton factors. Also included are letters, 1841-1843, from Montezuma Jones, as a student at UNC; a diary, 1869-1871, of teenager Frances Irene Jones; letters and political papers of Calvin Jones's daughter, Octavia Rowena Jones, and her husband, politician Edwin Polk; and correspondence and other items of Calvin Jones's wife, Temperance B. Jones. After 1880, there are scattered family letters and some business and professional letters to James W. Jones. Title: James Henry Hammond Papers 1774-1875 (bulk 1823-1864)

Senator, governor, and plantation owner. Correspondence, diaries, speeches, plantation manuals, account books, and scrapbooks pertaining chiefly to South Carolina and national politics in the three decades preceding the Civil War. Subjects include nullification, secession, slavery, the Southern Convention at Nashville, Tennessee (1850), state banks, states' rights, and the tariff. Also includes a mercantile letterbook, 1774-1780, of Andrew McLean.

The collection contains two physician's account ledgers, 1790-1799 (attributed to Dr. John Brockenbrough, 1744-1804) and 1827-1842 (possibly of Dr. John Brockenbrough, 1774-1852). With these are fragments of notes on fevers possibly from lectures or readings; a letter, 1832 February 7, John Jones Roane to Austin Brockenbrough re the desire of John Myers Felder to purchase slave families; and a letter, 1839 January 7, Austin Brockenbrough to an unidentified recipient re the settlement of the estates of William L.L. Clements and Benjamin Blacke.

Stroman, Jacob. Papers, 1775-1889 and n.d.

Title: Papers, 1775-1889 and n.d.

Primarily personal and business correspondence, bills, receipts, and legal papers concerning Jacob Stroman of Orangeburg County, S.C. and his dealings in lumber, cotton, molasses, and other commodities. He also made shoes for area residents. A series of letters from the 1850s from John W. Brodie of Charleston, S.C. relate to Stroman's frequent shipments of lumber and cotton, and comment in great detail on worsening economic conditions. A large group of business letters and notes from the Civil War period reflect the effect of the war on commerce in the South. There are some references to slaves, including one which states Stroman lost a 10 year-old slave to scarlet fever. Other legal and business letters were written to Charles J. Stroman of Blackville, S.C. in the late 1880s, and to a Capt. John M. Felder of Orangeburg, one with a land survey drawing on it.
