Correspondence, notes, bills, receipts, employee and sales records, ledgers, town records, deeds and other legal documents, and other papers, of Samuel and Isaac Arnold, businessmen, of Haddam, Conn., chiefly involved with a stone quarry, but also with shipping, wharves, banking, and local, state, and national politics. Includes correspondence (1858-1892) between Isaac Arnold and his son, Isaac Arnold, Jr., relating to the latter's education at West Point, service during the Civil War when he was wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, and later military career with the Ordnance Corps; materials concerning Samuel Arnold's activities as state legislator and U.S. representative; and some papers of Isaac Arnold's daughter, Sabra (Arnold) Ingersoll.

Title: Account books, 1824-1867.

Accounts with local tradesmen and farmers. Items include textiles, stone, timber and foodstuffs. Beginning in 1856, Arnold notes his trips to New York and Philadelphia, sleigh rides on the Connecticut River, his appearances at court or at the state legislature, local, state and presidential elections, horse racing, and political conventions. He also remarks on purchasing Civil War bounties for substitute soldiers, his banking business, and severe weather. The second volume in this collection documents the quarrying business of J. & G.C. Arnold & Co., also of Haddam.

Letters to and from Arnold, a Haddam, Connecticut, farmer, quarry operator, state representative and Congressman. The majority of the correspondence concerns the appointment of post masters in New Haven and Middlesex counties, while petitions and reports concern the construction of a new county jail and workhouse, petitions to incorporate the town of Higganum, and petitions to move the courts and workhouse to Middletown. One 1855 letter mentions the "humbug" of Nebraska. Correspondents include Connecticut politicians James T. Pratt and James Phelps. The collection also contains Samuel Arnold's deeds for land in Haddam, and some financial records. Brothers Isaac and Jonathan Arnold are represented by assorted legal and financial documents, including the settlement of Jonathan's estate.
