Much of the collection pertains to land, 1754-1835. Correspondence and accounts with agents regarding litigation, debts, disputes, sales, taxes, and surveys; the Loyal Land Co. of Va.; family plantations mentioned in letters; and autobiographical sketch of Thomas L. Preston; and Francis Preston's memoranda book discussing family genealogy and Preston family estate settlements, especially disputed land. Most of the collection deals with Francis Preston. His correspondence; business and legal matters, his role as agent for the Loyal Land Co.; documents regarding the War of 1812 signed by him; a 1797 political circular written by him; and a biographical sketch of him by his son Thomas. Colonel William Preston also figures prominently in the collection. His correspondence primarily concerns the American Revolution and land, and matters regarding the settlement of his estate are included. Correspondents include Nathaniel Hart, John Preston, William C. Preston, Isaac Shelby, Francis Walker, William C. Bullitt, Robert Wickliffe, Horace Greeley, and Edward Dorsey Hobbs. Legal and business papers, 1776-1838, of the Preston family and Arthur Campbell, regarding taxes, estates, a legislative act, court fees, a guardianship, household and farming materials, and services provided also are included. In addition, there are accounts of a Preston-Campbell family salt business at "Salt Works" Washington County, Va., 1785-1836; and considerable genealogical material regarding the Preston, Campbell, Buchanan, and allied families.

Preston; a 10 February 1796 letter to Thomas Marshall, Jr., asks him to send the deed for 5000 acres which he had sent to be recorded; a 7 November 1798 letter to John Coburn urges him to be a candidate for U.S. Senator, reminds him of his responsibility to his country, states that he will not vote for John Brown for the U.S. Senate, and notes other political matters; a 19 May 1800 letter announces his intention of "holding a pole" for U.S. Senator; and a 20 July 1801 letter to his brother James discusses family, farm matters, and personal affairs.

To settle the dispute, Eastin debates whether to retain the counsel of George Nicholas, who is "far superior to any in this country" or John Breckinridge who is "next in esteem." Eastin apologizes for problems obtaining a land warrant, but reassures Clark that "all will be right."

The collection includes a land warrant from the Commonwealth of Virginia to Monroe for 5,000 acres, a contract by John Crittenden for the sale of 5,000 acres in Kentucky to Monroe, an 1828 list of letters relating to land transactions, deed for sale of land and slaves in Henrico County, Va., U.S. military land grant to Monroe transferred to William Lytle, other U.S. military land grants to Monroe, and power of attorney to sell military bounty land. Also, includes land grants and patents signed by Monroe, deed of transfer of land in King George County, Va., of William Bankhead's share to Monroe, and an agreement for the sale of land in Loudoun County, Va., from John Duval to Monroe. Correspondence from Monroe concerns attempts to sell the land jointly owned with his uncle, Joseph Jones. Also, includes letters from John Marshall offering assistance in purchasing western land, from John Breckinridge reporting on Marshall's land in Kentucky, from Thomas Williams offering to buy Monroe's land in Ohio and commenting on squatters, and from Thomas Metcalfe seeking information on the sale of Monroe's land in Harrison County, Kentucky.

The papers contain correspondence, articles of agreement, deeds and indentures, surveyor's reports and plats, land grants, transcribed legal documents, and financial accounts pertaining to holdings in Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Washington City, Virginia, and Georgia. Company organizers James Greenleaf, John Nicholson and Robert Morris are the principal correspondents. Many of the letters were written by Greenleaf in his efforts to straighten out affairs of the company when it was put in receivership. The collection includes several manuscript maps of tracts of land including one for a complete block in Washington, and 19 deeds for land in South Carolina to Christopher Lewis and James White, 1791-1794, each with a map and seal attached and signed by Governor Moultrie. Collection also contains stock sale ledgers (9 v.), 1795 March to September; legal documents (2v.), 1793-1844; and a blank stock book with preprinted forms, n.d. Most of the correspondence centers around Breckinridge's legal career and his land speculations in Western Virginia and Kentucky. Other topics mentioned frequently are Virginia and United States politics, local elections, the War of 1812, the settlement of Kentucky and Tennessee, Indian wars, slavery and the Virginia militia. There are specific references to the formation of the Kentucky government, Congressional sessions, 1793-97, and 1805-1812, the Kentucky resolutions, 1798, trouble with squatters on Indian territory, and expeditions against the Indians, 1791 and 1813, collection of whiskey taxes, excises, the National Bank, internal improvements, and Burr's trial. Of interest are letters by James Madison on redistricting in Virginia, Andrew Jackson on James Wilkinson, John Marshall on internal improvements, Henry Clay on land sales, and Henry Lee on militia orders. The collection also contains a speech given in favor of Bell, 1860, a description of ironworks on Cripple Creek, Wythe Co., Va., rates charged by ordinary keepers, 1770, Mutual Assurance Society receipts, 1804-20, and a mutual stock holding venture to form a town, 1818. A few personal letters deal with Breckinridge's Catawba Mill, and the support of two illegitimate children.

Other topics include national and Virginia politics, the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1868, the reestablishment of a national bank, the Virginia Reform Convention of 1850, the American Know-Nothing Party, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Papers of Henry Dearborn, Secretary of War and commander of the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. Dearborn's journal describes the Sullivan Campaign of 1779 when Loyalist and Indian forces were routed at Elmira, N.Y. Poems, written by Dearborn, follow his journal entries. Letters from Thomas Jefferson concern Indian jurisdiction and negotiations for the Louisiana Purchase. Other correspondents include John Armstrong, Joel Barlow, John Breckinridge, Henry Clay, William Eustis, James Madison, James Monroe, and William Pinkney. Extensive official reports to Dearborn relate troop advances and failures during the War of 1812. Dearborn's dismissal as Army commander is explained in a written addendum. Later correspondence includes discussion of the Treaty of Ghent, the purchase of Chickasaw Indian lands west of the Tennessee River, and plans for the Second National Bank.

This series consists of photographs that document the Attorneys General of the United States. Attorneys General are documented through photographic copies of paintings and photographic portraits. In addition, some of the images show various activities of the Attorneys General, including press conferences, meetings, oaths of office, and banquets. Many of the photographs were used as part of a commemorative book, "200th Anniversary of the Office of the Attorney General", which highlights the history of the Office of Attorney General and the celebration of the anniversary on September 22, 1989. A copy of this book is included in this series in addition to another Department of Justice book,"Attorneys General of the United States, 1798-1985", which used many of the photographs. Not every Attorney General from the time period of the series is represented. A few images contain multiple Attorney Generals.
