Collection of military and political documents bound by Sir Thomas Phillipps. Contents include 5 "demands for gunne stores," 1705-1707; a legal opinion in a defamation case against one Mary Clarke, who had failed to plead her coverture, signed by Thomas Luttrell, 1781 Feb 24; 4 documents related to the events of the Second Anglo-Mysore War (1781-1784), including "Translation of a letter from his Highness the Nabob to the King of Great Britain," concerning the invasion of the Carnatic; "Copy of a letter from Lord Macartney to His Highness the Nabob dated 9th October 1784;" "Representation of Mahomed Najeef Cawa Bahadur translated from the Persian;" and a translation of a letter apparently from Tippoo Ali to Lord Macartney, undated. These are followed by 3 printed facsimiles of letters by Lord Nelson and Christopher Columbus. Following these are a series of documents mostly relating to events and emigres of the French Revolution, including minutes of a meeting of the Huntingdonshire militia and magistrates, 1798, with an "Estimate for a Field Riding House" by George Spiller; letters, petitions for financial support and accompanying documentation from three French ,migr,s, the comtesse de Trogoff, the comte Mertrus St-Ouen, and Jacques Destouche, whose claim is countersigned and attested to by the Royalist "Prince Bouillon" (Admiral Philippe D'Auvergne), 1794-1795; and petitions addressed to French authorities, including one by the widow Jollivet in 1818, having lost her husband to exile after the coup of 18 Fructidor V and her son "dans les deserts de La Russie" in 1811-12 and one by Pierre Armand Nayne in 1816. Other documents in this section of the volume include a genealogical chart for the de Maurienne family; tallies of Spanish and Italian infantry at Newport and Ostend in June 1701; an account of disbursements to Edward Repington, Esq., for 1737-38; and two sheets headed "tat des migr,s Italiens...1826" and listing Italian refugees in London who receive subsidies from the "Comite Italien." Signed by P. Maenza, the sheets include last name, signature and local address of many refugees, including a Rossetti at 24 Duke Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields. The last 10 documents in the volume concern the efforts of Naval personnel to collect prize money for Spanish ships of war captured in 1781 in fighting off Gibraltar.

Manuscripts, in a single hand, of Blagden's correspondence with Lord and Lady Palmerston. 71 letters are addressed to Lord Palmerston and 27 to Lady Palmerston. The letters discuss personal affairs, including the health of Lord Palmerston, his travels, and social news about acquaintances, especially of the marriage negotiations of Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, and of his daughter. Blagden also discusses political and military news, giving his correspondents extensive reports on the fighting at Madras and Seringapatam; the conclusion of a treaty between Sweden and Russia; and Dagobert Wurmser's actions against Napoleon Buonaparte in 1796. He also mentions sales of art collections, including those of the Duke of Orleans and the importation of an Egyptian statue to London, declaring that "the features of the countenance are sufficiently entire to assist in deciding the much-contested question, whether the acient Egyptians were Blacks," and comparing the statue to "our present negroes." Finally, the letters occasionally mention scientific matters and meetings of the Royal Society of London.

The first volume of a large collection of letters and notes by Sultan Tipu of Mysore, presented to the British Library by Lieut.-Col. W. Kirkpatrick and annotated throughout by him. It contains all the letters which appeared in the "Selected letters of Tippoo Sultan" published by Black, Parry, and Co. and covers the years A.H. 1198-1201 (i.e., A.D. 1784-1787).

Manuscript collection, in multiple hands, of 76 business and personal letters addressed primarily to De Havilland. Early letters in the collection contain military orders to De Havilland, including marching orders in 1805 and a request for a sketch of the frontier from Amnair to Nundubar; other letters from Captain Agnew concern the search for a suitable place for the cantonment of forces in 1806. In 1807, Montstuart Elphinstone sends routes and positions in the Nagpoor Country and mentions a delay in De Havilland's appointment to the survey of the Deccan. Later letters request recommendations for promotions and report on the capture of Satara, the contested fort of Thalner, the commencement of the siege at Assur, and an explosion of a battery in which "30 sepoys were killed." A letter dated 1843 asks for De Havilland's advice regarding the feasibility of a proposal to construct a pier at Madras. Personal letters from family to De Havilland include those from his wife and siblings, which discuss news of children, friends, and neighbors. The collection also contains several letters from De Havilland to his father; one dated from Trichinopoly in 1799 discusses the military affairs regarding the war against Tipu Sultan. Elsewhere, he mentions the birth of his daughter; his enjoyment of the monsoons; and the military activities in India. Also included in the collection are numerous personal letters to Mrs. De Havilland from other women. One, from Martha Garrard, provides information regarding her tenancy of Mrs. De Havilland's house in Seringapatam; her troubles engaging new servants; routine social activities; and gossip about acquaintances. Mrs. De Havilland also receives similar letters from Mrs. Meachem.

Title: Account of a voyage to Bombay, 1804.

Manuscript, in a single hand with marginal annotations throughout in a different hand, of an account of the author's travel to Bombay, beginning with the author's departure from "Hedgeree" by ship in 1804 to Bombay in the company of Richard Colley Wellesley, Governor-General of India. Once in Bombay, he provides a detailed description of Indian religious beliefs and customs, especially of Jainism; the effects of Catholic missions in Bombay; the geography; weather; and natural history. Throughout, he quotes extensively from Bartolomeo's Voyage to the East Indies. He also mentions the political situation, recounting the death of the Persian ambassador to Great Britain; the fall of Seringapatam; and the evidence of Zaman Shah's "inimical intentions...against the British Government"; and transcribes letters from Wellesley to the governor of Kabul; Zaman Shah; and the King of Persia regarding the movements of troops against the Sikhs. In the second section of the volume, he describes his 500-mile journey from Mangalore to Seringatpatam and then on to Fort St. George, including charts of his route with "remarks" upon many stages of the journey; and providing details on the political state of Mysore, the spice trade, and the gathering of intelligence. The author also includes many drawings throughout, including 7 watercolor illustrations of various scenes and people from the author's travels, such as "a monk of St. Francis" and "a monk of St. Augustine"; a picture of "Coffrey Slaves, people brought from the Mozabique, and who are perfect Savages"; "the marriage of Shiva & Parbutty"; 2 ink drawings of stone tablets signed "CMK"; and 2 pages, laid in and in watercolor, of the 24 Jain Tirthankars. Other items laid in are a newspaper clipping dated 1808 describing burial customs in ancient Persia; a chart in pencil of a list of "Jain Prophets" accompanied by a sketch of an elephant; an ink sketch of a procession; a small sketch of a Jain Tirthankar; a sketch of a column "at Chinroypatam"; and one page of Arabic writing.
