Civil War letters of James L. Dinwiddie describe his service as an artillery lieutenant under Richard Stoddert Ewell. Especially of interest are his detailed accounts of a forced march from the Valley to Richmond and the subsequent battle of Gaines Mill. Post-war letters between Bettie Carrington Dinwiddie and members of the Carrington family report family news. Many are letters of condolence on the deaths of children. The collection also contains daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and a tintype of family members.

Title: James Dinwiddie fonds. 1767-1815.

Fonds consists of the personal papers of Dr. James Dinwiddie which include his lecture notes, scientific journals, notebooks, manuscript, early experiments for 1774, correspondence, and personal journals and also some records from the Royal Institution for 1808-1814. The papers also include the journals of W.J. Proudfoot and a biography of his father (and Dinwiddie's son-in-law) James Proudfoot.
