Helicopter engineer and inventor. Born in Petrograd, Russia in 1882, De Bothezat attended the Technological Institute, Kharkow, Russia, 1902-1905; graduated with distinction from the Liege Electronic Institute of Belgium, 1907; did post-graduate work at Göttingen Universitat and the University of Berlin (Sc.D, 1911). From 1912-1917 he was a college professor of aviation engineering and related fields. In 1918 he came to the United States as a lecturer and scientist. He served as a scientific expert for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Washington, D. C., 1918-1921. From June 1921 to May 1923, De Bothezat was Acting Chief of the Special Research Section, Engineering Division, McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio. Under contract to the United States Government, he built the "De Bothezat Helicopter," one of the first helicopters in the history of aeronautics to actually perform sustained men-carrying flights. He was assigned to the area of basic research to develop ideas and principles of aerodynamics for the Engineering Division, McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, 1923-1925. He organized and headed two firms involved in manufacturing helicopters: first, the De Bothezat Impeller Company in New York, N.Y., 1925-1935; second, the Helicopter Corporation of America, which was begun in 1936. He died in 1940.

Born in Bessarabia, a province of Imperial Russia, George de Bothezat came to the United States in 1918. Recognized as the leading European authority in aerodynamics, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics appointed him to the position of "aerodynamic expert." In 1921, de Bothezat undertook the building of the de Bothezat helicopter, the first rotocraft ordered by the United States Army. The helicopter was built and tested at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, and was the first military helicopter to actually perform sustained, passenger-carrying flights. From December 1922 to April 1923, the de Bothezat helicopter made over 100 flights carrying from one to three passengers, rising to a height of 15 feet. De Bothezat demonstrated that his vehicle could be quite stable and that the practical helicopter was theoretically possible. The Army tested the machine and commented favorably on it, but ultimately abandoned it because of its complexity and unreliability and blocked further funding to de Bothezat. With no government sponsorship or private funds to support development of a second helicopter, De Bothezat organized the de Bothezat Impellar Company in New York in 1925 for the commercial development of his fan and blower patents and to use his "blade-screws" theory. By 1936, he organized and headed the Helicopter Corporation of America, which engaged in manufacturing his coaxial and other types of helicopters.

This collection was gathered and donated by Baron Vladimir Kuhn von Poushental and relates to the engineering, design, and manufacture of the de Bothezat helicopter and the mathematical concepts from which the structures were built. The most significant part of the collection deals with the first sustained passenger-carrying helicopter. The flights were made possible by the engineering knowledge of George de Bothezat and his staff who built the aircraft at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio. The balance of the material contains information about de Bothezat's contributions to science, his concepts about aerodynamic principles, and his ideas about the types and uses of future aircraft.
