Isabella Sarah Peyre was born on October 3, 1803 in Berkeley County, South Carolina to Francis Peyre and May Peyre Walter Peyre. She married Dr. William Porcher, with whom she had seven children, including Francis Peyre Porcher, physician and author of Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests. Widowed with small children, Mrs. Porcher assumed control of her husband's plantation Sarazins. In addition to managing the economy of this plantation, she also attended to the routine medical needs of its residents. A descendant of the botanist Thomas Walter, author of Flora Caroliniana, Mrs. Porcher employed local plants in the treatment of diseases. She died July 5, 1890.

Title: Francis Peyre Porcher papers, 1801-1888.

Papers consist of correspondence, a prescription book (1856-1861), commonplace books, scientific notes, clippings, and other items. Correspondence (1801-1959) consists primarily of Porcher family letters regarding family matters, Francis P. Porcher's education, and other topics. Included are copies of a letter (1864) from Francis P. Porcher to his sons concerning proper behavior, manners, and duties of young men; professional correspondence (1869-1888) of Francis P. Porcher on botany and Porcher's book "Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests"; and a letter (1801) from Francis Peyre concerning the illness of his wife Mary. Other correspondents include Peter Cordes Porcher, Isabella S. Porcher, and Julian Henry Porcher. Commonplace book (1843-1882, bulk 1843-1845) of Francis P. Porcher contains quotations, literary passages, and excerpts from works on various subjects such as history, philosophy, and literary criticism; a poem dated 1882 is inscribed on the last two pages. A commonplace book (1874-ca. 1903) bears the name "Margaret Bentley Ward" (later Margaret Porcher) but also contains entries by other family members; book contains literary passages, religious commentary, poems, pressed flowers and leaves (gathered "out on a walk with Dr. Porcher, Aug. 8th 1878"), a lock of hair, notes on family history, photographs, and transcriptions of letters and the "Autobiography of Francis Peyre Porcher." There are also clippings, drawings, and family letters pasted into the book. Another commonplace book (n.d.) of Francis P. Porcher contains quotations, definitions, and notes on topics such as history and science. Scientific notes pertain to Porcher's botanical studies and include notes for "Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests." Among these papers there are also clippings of reviews of Porcher's book and clippings concerning medicinal plants and other subjects. Printed material includes an article (1880) by Porcher about heart disease. Other items include biographical notes, clippings, and printed material about Porcher, and a patent (1870) for tanning and dyeing agents.

Also included is a recipe for whitewash.

The Francis Peyre Porcher Papers, 1844-1895, consist of 1.5 cubic feet of materials documenting primarily the professional activities of Francis Peyre Porcher, physician of Charleston, South Carolina. The collection is arranged in three series: professional, personal, and printed material. It includes 51 folders of Porcher's lecture, class, and research notes on materia medica, botany, and pharmacy compiled over his career in support of his medical teaching responsibilities and the publication of his book, Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests... Also included are personal letters to and from members of the Leigh, Porcher, and Wickham families from 1846 to 1862. Of particular interest are letters from Francis Peyre Porcher to his first wife Virginia "Jennie" Leigh Porcher written from camp in Virginia between 1862 and 1863. In these, Porcher relates news of his advancement through the office of the Surgeon General, of living and working conditions in camp, and of family news and affections. Dr. Porcher's travel diary from 1852 to 1854 document his travels in Europe. The Professional Series is dominated by Porcher's notes, arranged alphabetically, which include notes for classroom instruction in the areas of materia medica and therapeutics. Files include handwritten notes, clippings, sketches, prescriptions, sources, and notes for publications. The book printed material series consists of 14 books, including Porcher's annotated copy of Prescriber's Pharmacopoeia, 1844, Porcher's lecture notebook, 1852 to 1857, his commonplace book, 1846 to 1875, and the Porcher family Bible.
