Letter book, 1789 Jun.-1800 Apr., of William Kenyon of New York City, containing extensive outgoing correspondence to merchants, ships' captains, and associates in England, the West Indies, and other locations in the United States. Letters relate to various matters of interest to export-import merchants of the period, such as the various dangers facing merchant ships at sea, troubles with the French and French privateers, high insurance rates, supply and demand of important trade goods such as wheat, coffee, cotton, indigo, etc., the disposition and condition of individual vessels, the purchase or chartering of vessels, status of specific accounts with business associates, consignments, etc. Kenyon additionally refers to the 1798 outbreaks of yellow fever which plagued New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, the flight of citizens from these cities, and the resulting disruption to trade. Waterman family papers, 1757-1954, 1757-1911

Title: Waterman family papers 1757-1954 1757-1911

The papers represent four generations of the Nehemiah Waterman family of Norwich, Connecticut. The principal figures are Elijah Waterman and his son Thomas Tileston Waterman, both Congregational ministers. The papers of Elijah Waterman consist of correspondence with other ministers, approximately 125 sermons, and histories of Woodstock, Pomfret, Lebanon and Hampton, Connecticut. The papers of Thomas Tileston Waterman also contain professional correspondence, sermons and religious publications. His wife, Delia Storrs Waterman's journals for the years ca.1848-1880, as well as essays, poetry and financial papers are included. There is also a series a scrapbooks kept by their son, Thomas Storrs Waterman with clippings and notes on politics, religion and history. General family correspondence, chiefly for the period 1795-1876, genealogical papers, photographs, financial documents, printed matter and memorabilia complete the collection.

Document signed. Signed by Thomas Mifflin. Order to pay Robert Ralston twenty-seven pounds five shillings for his wages as a member of the General Assembly. Rittenhouse was State Treasurer of Pennsylvania.

The papers were collected by William Henry Russell of Annapolis, Md., and are primarily from Samuel and Isaac W. Morris. However, there are scattered papers from other family members from the first Anthony Morris to John Thompson Morris (1847-1915), the founder of the Morris Arboretum in Germantown. There are also papers from members of the Wistar, Paschall, and Mifflin families allied by marriage.

This collection contains the personal letters and business documents of several members of the Grew family, as well as some relating to the Wigglesworth, Greene, Phillips, Williams, and Crosby families. Series I: The Grew Family contains correspondence of members of the immediate and extended family, including Henry Grew, John Grew, Anna C. (Grew) Alvord, Henry Sturgis Grew, Jane Norton (Wigglesworth) Grew, Mary Coltman, Elizabeth Coltman, George Sturgis, Anne Terry (Greene) Phillips, and Wendell Phillips. Also included are letters patent (land documents) pertaining to Ebenezer Young; John and Mary (Coltman) Grews marriage settlement; a note inviting Wendell Phillips to serve as the delegate from the Massachusetts to the American Anti-Slavery Society; photographs sent from China by Henry Sturgis Grew; a scrapbook containing Civil War newspaper clippings compiled by either Anne or Thomas Wigglesworth; and a travel journal kept by Jane Norton (Wigglesworth) Grew. Series II: The Crosby Family contains letters written to William Bedloe Crosby, including some from his uncle Henry Rutgers; a lease agreement from 1767; a reference letter for Doctor Peter S. Townsend; and letters to John Schuyler Crosby. Also included are letters pertaining to Sir William Johnson and Governor John Tayler, and a manuscript detailing the history of the Burr/Hamilton dueling pistols, written by Major Richard Church. Series III: The Williams Family contains letters written by Franklin Delano Williams to his family in Greenfield, MA during his time in China, as well as shipping invoices and other business documents. Also included are letters written to Mary (Nelson) Williams after her husband died.
