Includes legal and financial records, will, and survey. Correspondents include Charles Carroll of Carrollton, James Monroe, Robert Morris, Benjamin Rush, Michael Jenifer Stone, and Thomas Stone.

A letter to his brother, concerning the lack of wise and temperate men in politics, the issue of paper money in Maryland, and various land purchases; and advising him to get married, settle in a healthy place, and get out of debt. The end of the letter, with the signature, is missing.

William Stone papers, 1762-1876, 1821-1845

Title: William Stone papers

William B. Stone, a lawyer and landowner from Charles County, Maryland, counted among his ancestors a number of influential Maryland politicians, including a proprietary governor from the early seventeenth century. Stone himself was at one time considered by the U.S. Senate for a federal judge's seat. Records show that Stone enslaved people on his property. Census records enslaved 10 people in 1830, 17 people in 1840, 31 people in 1850, and 32 people in 1860. National politics, slavery, individual enslaved peoples, legal and financial settlements are among the topics covered in Stone's papers, which consist of correspondence between Stone and relatives or business associates.

Chiefly the business and legal papers of Stone, including deeds, wills, and similar papers. There are also scattered personal letters, including a letter of Michael J. Stone, a member of the first U.S. Congress, 1789-1791, announcing the establishment of the seat of government and its importance to the state of Maryland; and a letter from Alexander Matthews describing party strife in the Maryland assembly in 1840.
