The earliest letters are from the Revolutionary War and convey family news and disgust at the progress of the war. Many of the later letters are concerned with agricultural troubles in Virginia and subsequent emigration to Kentucky, Mississippi, and Missouri. Of interest are a mention of Lafayette's return visit to the U.S., a description of the capture of Monterey by a lt. on the Relief, and a brief letter of regret from Henry Clay. Correspondents include: William Eggleston, W.E. Johnston, David Meade, Everard Meade, Richard Everard Meade, and Francis Thornton.

The collection contains correspondence and legal documents of the Everard Meade family. Chief subjects are family news and the continuing friendship of the family with the family of Hodijah Baylies of Dighton, Mass., a Revolutionary War comrade of Everard Meade. Topics include visits between the Meade and Baylies families; an exchange of portraits; the capture of a British ship by militia off the New Jersey coast in 1777; anti-abolitionist sentiment in New England in 1835; the panic of 1837; a poisoning attempt by a slave; Confederate troop movements in February 1863; hard times during Reconstruction, particularly financial aid from the Baylieses to the Meades; and the grandfatherly advice of Thomas Rutherfoord, Sr., father-in-law of Hodijah Meade. The collection also contains an 1802 arithmetic book, an 1841 blacksmith's account, an 1854 almanac, wills, deeds, indentures, accounts, a land survey, and a bounty claim for War of 1812 service.

The papers of the family, particulary Richard Everard Meade primarily contain news of family and friends. Of interest are letters written to Meade when he was studying medicine at Edinburgh and touring Europe, and a few letters written to him by a medical student in Philadelphia. Slavery and western settlement are mentioned briefly. There are also scattered bills and certificates in French, a preface to a cookbook by Harriet Meade Brown and an 1833 suicide note by Edwin Randolph.
