Correspondence (1834-1941), genealogical works, clippings (1925-1965) and a daguerreotype constitute this small collection of 16 documents from the descendants of Abishai Dickson. Abishai Dickson's separation from his wife and young family while in Mississipi and later while en route to fight in the Texas Revolution with the Red Rovers from Tuscumbia, Alabama, are recorded in the 1834-1835 correspondence. The correspondence from 1839-1861 deals priimarily with family life in Texas during the Republic and statehood, and life in Mississippi during the Civil War. Later correspondence, genealogical works, and clipping concern the Dickson family. A daguerreotype of Ann Margaret Lucas Dickson Sutherland is included.

Abishai M. Dickson (1803-1836), an Alabama native, joined the Alabama Red Rovers in response to the events of the Texas Revolution and was killed in the Goliad massacre. His widow, Ann Margaret Lucas Dickson, and their children moved to Texas to claim land due Dickson for his military service. Ann Margaret Dickson married John Sutherland, a participant at the Battle of the Alamo, in Colorado County in 1841. Letters and genealogical material related to several individuals and families make up the Dickson family papers.

(Craighead) Lilly, including her parents, James P.N. Craighead (1812-1874) and Sarah A. Craighead (1833-1870), and her maternal grandfather, John Sutherland, Jr. (1792-1867), and his third wife, Ann Margaret (Dickson) Sutherland (1809-1862).
