Gregorie, Anne King. Anne King Gregorie papers relating to Thomas Sumter, ca. 1930.
Title:
Anne King Gregorie papers relating to Thomas Sumter, ca. 1930.
Collection mainly consists of Gregorie's transcriptions of the correspondence of Gen. Thomas Sumter dating from 1763 to 1832 (bulk 1779-1800), taken from various sources, including the Horatio Gates papers in the New-York Historical Society, the Thomas Sumter papers in the Library of Congress, and the Draper Collection in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Letters written during the Revolutionary War concern military operations mainly in South Carolina; correspondents of this period include General DeKalb, Major Thomas Pinckney, Gen. Horatio Gates, William Smallwood, John Rutledge, and Gen. Nathanael Greene. Much postwar correspondence concerns financial, legal, and political matters. Includes a transcript of Thomas Sumter's speech (1798) about a provisional army. Also noteworthy are his letters concerning John C. Calhoun (1824). Several letters dating to the 1830s deal with the issues of states' rights and nullification, one of which (published in newspapers, and possibly written or edited by his grandson Thomas De Lage Sumter) speaks of a political party "in favor of a national consolidated government...no longer in harmony with the spirit of our constitution" (25 Dec. 1830). In a letter by Thomas Sumter published as an open letter (Nov. 1831), he characterizes this party as a "relentless majority, whose object is to prostrate, at their feet, the interests of the Southern States. I have known this party from the date of the Constitution, and believe me...every act of theirs has hitherto marked them out, as hostile to our interests and to those principles of liberty, for which so many eminent men have suffered." Also included are two letters (1930 and 1931) to Gregorie regarding papers of Thomas Sumter in the Clements Library at the University of Michigan and in the New York Public Library.

Title:
Letter : to Christopher Gadsden, Charleston, S.C., 1801 April 16.
Letter from Adams at Stony Field begins by expressing friendly sentiments. Adams has read Gadsden's publication and values his friendship. He inveighs against Jacobinism and "foreigners," recommends J. Rutledge's plan concerning admission into citizenship of the latter and suggests caution. Refers to Gen. Pinckney's conduct in the last election. Adams will now occupy himself with his interests in agriculture and letters, and he wishes to return to the bar to forget public life as so much as happened to "mortify the vanity of man." He wishes prosperity to Jefferson's administration but feels it is too strongly infected with party spirit.

Title:
Letter, 1792 January 28, Philadelphia [Pennsylvania] to [William] Short, n.p.
Informs Short of the controversy in the Senate surrounding the approval of the nominated ambassadors: Thomas Pinckney's appointment to England was vetoed, Gouverneur Morris' nomination narrowly passed, and Short's bid for the post at the Hague was approved; Jefferson warns Short against accepting the position, though, because the funding for it is unlikely to be approved; instead Jefferson recommends Short accept a special diplomatic mission to Spain that the President is prepared to offer him.

Title:
Francis Kinloch Huger correspondence, 1795-1820.
Correspondence includes a note (1795 Jan. 7) to [Thomas] Pinckney from Huger during his imprisonment at Olmutz asking Pinckney to tell his mother that he is well and that his "sentence is not yet known." Note also mentions the status of other prisoners. In another note (1795 Feb. 7) to Pinckney (U.S. Minister to France) Huger anticipates knowing his "fate" (sentence) very soon, and discusses the circumstances of the failed attempt to liberate Lafayette. Letter (1799 April 17) from Lafayette in Vienna (Austria) concerns the delay of Lafayette's visit to America and his exiled friend Bureaux de Pusy, who is about to embark for the United States. Letter (1820 Nov. 6) to Huger from Lafayette discusses a mutual friend and political events in France. Also included is a photostat of part of a letter (n.d.) in French signed "Noailles Lafayette."
