This collection is divided into 9 series: Gourdin-Young papers, 1827-1915; Records of the U.S. Collector of Customs, Savannah, Ga., 1799-1917; British Consulate at Savannah papers, 1821-1895; Robert R. Henry papers, 1830-1846; Mackay papers, 1801-1876; Mann-Pray-Sleigh-Hines papers, 1803-1848; Pinckney papers, 1770-1881; Jacob Read papers, 1775-1811; General collections, 1775-1918, undated. It consists of manuscripts, correspondence, legal and research documents, land records, photographs, and other materials collected by Keith Read. Most materials relate to the social and political histories of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, focusing on land records and legal records. Both the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, received Keith Read collections. Most of the Gourdin-Young series consists of copies of the originals owned by Emory University. Almost the entire U.S. Collector of Customs series is available on microfilm, prepared by the Federal Records Center of East Point, Georgia (now NARA's Atlanta Records Center).

The collection consists of two documents related to the Yazoo Land Fraud. The first piece, dated 3 March 1795, is the enrolled copy of the congressional resolution authorizing "that the President of the Untied States be, and hereby is requested to give directions to the Attorney General, to collect, digest, report to the next Congress, the Charters, treaties and other documents relative to, and explanatory of the title ot the land situate in the south-western parts of the United States, and claimed by certain companies, under a law of the State of Georgia...". Accompanying it is a manuscript circular letter signed by Edmund Randolph as Secretary of State to Thomas Pinckney, Minister Plenipotentiary in London discussing the resolution.

In a letter, 1813 December 28, Jefferson advises Charles Clay that the prices for Mr. Forbes' cotton and wool carding machines are higher than originally estimated. In a letter, 1814 October 20, James Monroe informs Georgia governor Peter Early that the Georgia contractor must supply rations to both militia and regulars, asks him to make requisitions, and reports that Thomas Pinckney will need an officer from the Quartermaster Dept. for his militia. In a letter, 1817 October 12, James Madison writes to Richard Cutts regarding a gardener for Montpelier, missing numbers of "Niles' Weekly Register" and his autographed copy of Marbois' history of Benedict Arnold's treason which Richard Rush has. With these is an engraving of Jefferson by Thomas B. Welch.

Collection mainly consists of Gregorie's transcriptions of the correspondence of Gen. Thomas Sumter dating from 1763 to 1832 (bulk 1779-1800), taken from various sources, including the Horatio Gates papers in the New-York Historical Society, the Thomas Sumter papers in the Library of Congress, and the Draper Collection in the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Letters written during the Revolutionary War concern military operations mainly in South Carolina; correspondents of this period include General DeKalb, Major Thomas Pinckney, Gen. Horatio Gates, William Smallwood, John Rutledge, and Gen. Nathanael Greene. Much postwar correspondence concerns financial, legal, and political matters. Includes a transcript of Thomas Sumter's speech (1798) about a provisional army. Also noteworthy are his letters concerning John C. Calhoun (1824). Several letters dating to the 1830s deal with the issues of states' rights and nullification, one of which (published in newspapers, and possibly written or edited by his grandson Thomas De Lage Sumter) speaks of a political party "in favor of a national consolidated government...no longer in harmony with the spirit of our constitution" (25 Dec. 1830). In a letter by Thomas Sumter published as an open letter (Nov. 1831), he characterizes this party as a "relentless majority, whose object is to prostrate, at their feet, the interests of the Southern States. I have known this party from the date of the Constitution, and believe me...every act of theirs has hitherto marked them out, as hostile to our interests and to those principles of liberty, for which so many eminent men have suffered." Also included are two letters (1930 and 1931) to Gregorie regarding papers of Thomas Sumter in the Clements Library at the University of Michigan and in the New York Public Library.

The Lafayette Collection contains materials by, to or about Lafayette and his family, with family documents extending back to 1245 and through the death of Georges Washington Lafayette in 1849. The series "Medals and Coins" covers a century and a half, up to 1931. The collection includes the oldest existing letter from Lafayette (1772), long missives he sent to his wife from America during the Revolution, other letters he wrote while imprisoned in Austria (1792-1797) and during his 1824-5 trip to the USA; texts of Lafayette's speeches, his commentary on public events, material compiled for inclusion in his memoirs, financial statements ; many letters from foreign correspondents on the progress of liberal causes in their countries, including letters from leaders of the Italian revolutionary movement; notes concerning the Belgian revolution, letters and documents on his involvement in the Italian and Polish revolutions, and documents concerning the management of family business affairs, including the management of the family estates. Some of the more remarkable documents were put on display for the exhibition "Lafayette, Citizen of Two Worlds" (October 2007-May 2008), whose electronic version is now accessible online http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/lafayette/.

Papers are scattered, largely unrelated items, some of interest chiefly as autographs, others containing significant information on political and military affairs. The greatest number of items relates to the Revolutionary War in the South, particularly the Carolinas, but also Virginia and Georgia. These include letters and other documents of many military and civic leaders. There are papers related to French attempts at colonization in the 16th century, 18th-century colonial history of the Carolinas, and the siege of Charleston, S.C., 1780; and letters, 1774-1779, from John Pringle (1753-1843) of South Carolina discussing American Revolutionary diplomacy from Europe. A separate series consists of documents pertaining to lands in North and South Carolina acquired by the Kershaw and Chesnut families of South Carolina.
