Papers documenting Lourie's public life in state government and his personal interests in private life; collection arranged in four series: Public Papers, Personal Papers, Audio-Visual Materials, and Clippings. Public Papers chiefly reflect Lourie's tenure in the S.C. General Assembly, and his career in the Democratic Party at state and national level, including 10 page draft letter, ca. 1990, addressed to national Democratic Party chairman Ron Brown, providing a frank and open presentation of his views on the decline of the Democratic Party and steps which could be taken to remedy this decline. Speeches and speech materials demonstrate Lourie's career-long advocacy of the interests of working-class people and his attempt to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians. Speeches on education, taxes, civil rights, consumer affairs, government reform, the elderly, and Jewish issues dominate this sub-series. Public Papers: Topical files relate to bills and issues before the Senate, committee service and bills pending and proposed, state agencies, local projects, and other matters of import. Records include texts and drafts of legislation, correspondence with other members of the Assembly and constituents, memoranda, and reports. Personal Papers: Persons files include materials relating to T. M. "Babe" Nelson, I. DeQuincey Newman, and Alex Sanders. Lourie served on the steering committee that created the Nelson Scholarship Fund for "needy and deserving students" at the University of South Carolina. Lourie maintained a close relationship with Newman and also served on the I. DeQuincey Newman Portrait Committee. Audio Visual series includes images of Lourie as a young adult, and later in his career; video recordings include television coverage of public hearings, elections, and other topics, Lintheads and Hard Times (filmed Apr. 1986, at Olympia School in Columbia, S.C.); and dedication ceremony of "Instructional Services Center" honoring I. DeQuincy Newman (7 July 1989).

Tape-recorded and transcribed interviews of leaders within the South Carolina civil rights movement, particularly the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In addition to interviews with Rev. J. H. Hinton, Benjamin Mack, Richard Miles, Hayes Mizell, Rev. I. D. Newman, and Modjeska Simkins, there are also gospel songs and a radio script composed by Blake McNulty, the collection interviewer.
