Series I contains general research and administrative materials created during the production of the project. A copy of the NEH-grant application requesting funding outlines the goals of the project and describes the filmmakers' approach to the selection of interview candidates and their methodology for conducting filmed oral histories. A file of biographical sketches offers concise profiles on almost 100 volunteers and includes information on family background, wartime experiences, and life after Spain. This series also includes publicity used to promote the film and a sampling of reviews. Series II includes transcribed interviews of 23 veterans including Bill Bailey, Edward Balchowsky, Ruth Davidow, Benjamin Goldstein, Evelyn Hutchins, Vaughn Love, Steve Nelson, Thomas Page and Milton Wolff. Also includes an interview with producer and actor John Houseman and copy of a memoir by hospital administrator Mildred Rackley.

Journalist and scholar John ("Tito") Gerassi received his MA at Columbia University and earned his doctorate at the London School of Economics. Among his publications are The Great Fear in Latin America (1965), The Boys of Boise (1966), and the biography Jean-Paul Sartre: Hated Conscience of His Century, (1989). The Premature Anti-Fascists: Oral History of American and Canadian Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War was published in 1986, and is a tribute to the men and women who volunteered to fight on behalf of the Spanish Republic. This collection contains 227 audiocassettes consisting of 89 separate interviews with individual veterans that were conducted for Gerassi's project.

The collection includes research and administrative material created during the production of the project and transcribed interviews with 23 veterans.

Series I consists predominantly of photographs from Landis' scrapbooks and the personal photo albums of his mother, Alice Fries. These items contained images of Landis' childhood and family: grandmother Ethel Fries, father William (Bill) N. Landis, and brother William (Billie) H. Landis. Other family members represented in the series include Landis' aunts Edith and Mabel Fries, cousins Grace Fries and Helen Fries-Topping, uncle Jim Topping, and nephew William D. Landis. Landis' scrapbooks were disassembled and the photographs divided according to subject category. Photocopies of the original order of Landis' photo albums are contained in Box 4, Folders 9-12. Loose photographs from Alice Fries' keepsake albums were removed and added to the photograph collection, arranged according to subject category. Her albums that contained only photographs were preserved intact. Photocopies indicating the original order of the disassembled albums are in Box 4, Folders 7-8. Images from the Spanish Civil War include, bombed buildings, Arthur Landis, Ernie Parlor and unidentified international volunteers, medical personnel and vehicles, and Spanish soldiers. There are additional photographs of political demonstrations and rallies in the United States attended by the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade including one image of Dolores Ibárruri in Spain and one image of Paul Robeson, Moe Fishman, and Bart Van Der Shilling at a rally in Los Angeles, California.

Landis provided vets with a demo tape (ALBA A 66-038) that "gave the outline structure of the book and a detailed explanation of his desire to give adequate attention to all phases of the war which Americans participated in, from ambulance drivers to the commando zealots." Further, Landis stressed: "material for taping [should] be put in chronological order to avoid a time-consuming play-back. We suggest you at least make notes before making the tape. Oh yes, tape at a speed of 3-1/4." Members were told that they could use their own tape recorders, or that VALB would loan out both recorder and tapes. The tapes were not professionally recorded, nor were the sessions conducted as conventional oral histories. Consequently, the sound quality varies tape to tape, and veterans at times do not identify themselves or provide many autobiographical details. The focus is on their day-by-day participation in the war. An additional box of 1/4 in. reel-to-reel tapes at the end of the collection (ALBA A 66-147 through ALBA A 66-163) contains miscellaneous reels not associated with the book project, several of which feature German singer Bart Van der Schelling singing songs of the Spanish Civil War. Van der Schelling is pictured with Paul Robeson and Arthur Landis, among others, in a photograph in the Arthur H. Landis Photo Collection.

This collection contains 227 audiocassettes consisting of 89 separate interviews with individual veterans. The average taping session was 7 hours and there are multiple tapes associated with most of the interviews. The interviews cover the following topics: family background and political affiliations, their motivations for joining the International Brigades, experiences and impressions of Spain, instances of discrimination and harassment during WWII and subsequently during the McCarthy era. Included are oral history interviews with the following individuals: Bill Bailey, Alvah Bessie, Robert Colodny, Archie Brown, Walter Dent, Milt Felsen, Moe Fishman, John Gates, Carl Geiser, Robert Gladnick, Irving Goff, Syd Harris, Ocsar Hunter, Admiral Kilpatrick, Edward Lending, Vincent Lossowski, Carl Marzani, John Murra, Steve Nelson, Lou Ornitz, Rosario Pistone, Herman Rosenstein (a.k.a. Gabby Klein), Walter Scheutrum, Morris Stamm, Robert Steck, George Watt, Irving Weissman, and Milton Wolff. Although the oral history interviews were chiefly conducted with combat veterans, there are also several interviews with women who like Salaria Kee O'Reilly, Nan Green, and Rose Wachsman Sorkin, who served in the medical units or, in the lone case of Evelyn Hutchins, as a driver. The collection also includes three tapes with spoken research notes that Gerassi recorded during his visits to libraries and archives at Brandies University, Cleveland University, and the Toronto Public Library, as well as a tape of the Veteran's of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade 43rd Anniversary event honoring African-American volunteers. An additional tape documents Gerassi's contract with Ray Villis, his principal interviewer on the project.

Arthur H. Landis (1917-1986) joined the 15th International Brigade in 1937 and fought with the MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion. In 1967, Landis wrote about Americans in the Spanish Civil War, and later published , about the political complexities of the war. The collection contains photographs from Landis’ scrapbook and his mother Alice Fries’ photo albums, including images of his childhood and family. Alice Fries was a singer, dancer and member of the American Guild of Variety Artists. Images from the Spanish Civil War include bombed buildings, Ernie Parlor and unidentified international volunteers, medical personnel and vehicles, and Spanish soldiers. There are additional photographs of demonstrations in the United States attended by the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The collection includes color slides of Spanish cities: Albacete, Belchite, Brunete, Murcia, and Teruel, and maps of various Republican fronts. Title: John Dollard Research Files for Fear and Courage under Battle Conditions 1942-1944

John Dollard (1900-1980) was a psychologist and social scientist best known for his studies on race relations in America. From 1942 to 1945 he served as a consultant in the Morale Services Division the United States Department of War, during which time he and fellow psychologists at Yale University’s Institute of Human Relations produced a study titled "Fear and Courage under Battle Conditions." This study investigated fear and morale of soldiers in modern combat conditions. With the active assistance of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade interviews with Lincoln Brigade veterans were carried out and a questionnaire distributed. Three hundred veterans who had served as volunteers with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War replied and became the research subjects for the study. The collection consists of some research files of Dr. John Dollard and his staff. Included are fourteen interview transcripts, two completed questionnaires, a correspondence file, a published version of the project report, and some clippings and publicity material.
