Photocopy of a microfilm reproduction of a typed manuscript. The item is an account of Thomas Durham, his wife, Carol, and his son, Thomas Jr., when they were travelling from Payson, Utah, to Salt Lake City, Utah, to atten General Conference of the Mormon Church. They were camped on "this side" [south?] of the Provo River when "a man rode up on a beautiful b---- pony, with four white feet, all so clean. . . . As he rode up, he spoke to Brother Durham, asking his name. Then he told him his wife and two sons, would be coming along soon and asked if they would tell them to stay at their camp fire, until he came back." The man knew of an accident near Springville, Utah, even though he had not come from that direction. The man also had "a little surrey with fringe around the top." After the man had passed "Brother Durham started on but they all glanced back to get a last look, at the beautiful outfit, but they were no where in sight, they had completely disappeared. Brother Durham always felt like this was one of the three nephites. Uncle Lars Mortenson, who was just ahead, said they not seen or passed anyone of this description."

Typewritten copy of an autobiography and diary. Durham wrote his autobiography in 1854 and started his diary the same year. The journal is sketchy in many places and has many gaps. Durham wrote about his youth in England, his conversion to the Mormon Church, his mission in England, his spiritual manifestations, blessings, and his migration to Utah. He left Florence, Nebraska on 23 Aug. 1856 and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah on 30 Nov. 1856. He apparently travelled in one of the ill-fated handcart companies that got caught in the snows in Wyoming. Durham writes about the hardships he faced during the ordeal.

Photocopy of a microfilm reproduction of a typed manuscript. The item is a biography of Thomas Durham. He lived in England, joined the Mormon Church in 1850, married Mary Morton in 1852, and migrated to Utah in 1856 with the Martin handcart company. He soon went to Parowan, Utah, where he led the local choir for 62 years. He married a second wife, Mary Mitchell, in 1860 and took a thid wife, Carole Mortensen, in 1867. Durham made a living as a furniture maker. Alfred M. Durham describes his family life when he was growing up. He writes that the three wives lived in the same house, that life was happy, and that everyone seemed to get along well. Thomas Durham took the Parowan choir to Salt Lake City, Utah, where it sang for the General Conference of the Mormon Church and also sang for General William T. Sherman in 1870. Thomas Durham had to hide from federal marshals to avoid arrest for polygamy, and he had a number of dreams about the Book of Mormon late in his life.
