The ledger contains accounts, 1795-1797, of a saddle-maker, possibly William Reid. A later owner, possibly a Lizzie Reid, turned the volume into a commonplace book, pasting in clippings of short stories, poems, and sentimental engravings. Among them are articles by T.S. Arthur, Eliza Cook, "Paul Creyton" (J.T. Trowbridge), Edward Everett, Fanny Fern, Metta V. Fuller, George Lippard, Charles Mackay, and Tennyson.

The collection contains eight letters. Arthur writes to Mr. Colman (probably the New York publisher Samuel Colman), 6 Mar. 1846, trying to arrange a deal to sell books; five letters (with envelopes) to Dr. T.C. Adam, 1852-1855, arranging to pay him for contributing editorials to the Home gazette, explaining his editorial policy, and discussing various matters of business as well as describing his health problems; to S.A. Kingman, 30 Jan. 1864, giving his autograph; and to Sarah Bridges Stebbins, 18 Feb. 1880, saying her name will be included with her story and rejecting another submission. One of the letters to T.C. Adam is written on the Office of Arthur's Home Magazine stationery featuring subscription information on the verso. Another letter to T.C. Adam is written on an advertisement for books published and for sale by J.W. Bradley of Philadelphia. Several of Arthur's books are listed.

Included is an undated, handwritten, signed poem, "The Miser Mother" (36 lines) by Stephen Phillips, British poet and dramatist; an undated, handwritten poem, "The Discoverer" by William Bingham Tappan of Massachusetts, a poet, school teacher, preacher, and general agent of the American Sunday School Union in Boston, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati, who wrote the poem for John Bartholomew Gough, a reformed alcoholic and evangelistic temperance orator; undated sentences and phrases in the hand of Ralph Waldo Emerson on one small sheet, one side of which is labeled in the margin in pencil "Classes of Men"; "Los Proceres del Alto Llano" (10 pages), an essay, in Spanish, commenting on the Venezuelan independence movement, dated 27 October 1896, by Manuel Landaeta Rosales (1847-1920), Venezuelan writer and editor of "El Tiempo," a Caracas newspaper; a receipt, in Italian, for an item purchased, dated Anno VI, 4 Nevoso, sent to Italian writer Ugo Foscolo of Milan, Italy; a letter, in Italian, dated 11 March 1909, from Buonanno to a friend about the controversy over the friendship of Giocomo Leopardi and Antonio Ranieri; a review, dated 1907, of Bliss Perry's "Walt Whitman, His Life and Work" (1906) by Australian scholar, editor, essayist, and poet John Le Gay Brereton, with instructions to the printer and other remarks, including, on the last page, a note in Brereton's hand: "I don't know whether this is to be a signed article.
