Correspondence, invoices, inventories, registers, handwritten notes, narrative descriptions, printed material, and some photographs document the selection, purchase, exhibition, and disposition of art works in Henry Clay Frick's collection from the years 1881 to 1919. Also includes inventories made in 1920 after Mr. Frick's death. Series I: Purchases contains the bulk of the material. Mr. Frick's association with the art dealers M. Knoedler & Co. and Duveen Brothers is documented in correspondence with Charles Carstairs, Roland Knoedler and Joseph Duveen. Additional correspondents include Roger Fry, Carel F.L. de Wild, A. De Beruete, Arthur Tooth & Sons, Edward Brandus, Virginia P. Bacon, Abraham Bredius, and Gardiner Martin Lane. Among the topics discussed are recommendations of works to consider for purchase, price negotiations, provenance, attribution, exhibitions, and conservation work. The collection also contains letters from some of the artists whose works Mr. Frick purchased, including Jules Breton, J.C. Cazin, F.D. Millet, William A. Coffin, Joseph Lindon Smith, Edmund Tarbell, Fritz Thaulow and P. Dagnan Bouveret. Also of note are files concerning works considered or offered, but not purchased, lists of works placed on approval at One East 70th Street, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts exhibition of 52 of Mr. Frick's paintings in 1910; and two catalogues of Mr. Frick's collection, from 1908 and 1915. Three files include details on the interior decoration of two rooms in the Frick residence: the Fragonard Room and the boudoir of Adelaide H.C. Frick (now the Boucher Room). They contain several letters from Carrére & Hastings and Charles Allom of White, Allom & Co.

Vose Galleries of Boston records

Title: Vose Galleries of Boston records

The records of Vose Galleries of Boston measure 26.6 linear feet and date from circa 1876, 1890s-1996 with the bulk of materials dating from 1920s-1930s. Nearly 90 percent of the collection documents the gallery's handling of American paintings and portraits through incoming and outgoing business correspondence with artists, clients, galleries, and museums, including considerable correspondence with portrait artist Alfred Jonniaux and clients regarding commissioned portraits. Other materials include client files; artists' biographies; records of sales, consignments, framing, restoration, and banking, mostly from the 1940s-1960s; and scattered exhibition catalogs, newspaper clippings, and postcards. Also found is a handwritten manuscript regarding the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, PA and a 1991 videotape about the Vose Galleries and its founding family.Correspondence of note is with artists Childe Hassam, Malvina Hoffman, Alfred Jonniaux, and John Singer Sargent; galleries Ehrich Galleries, Clapp & Graham Co., M. Knoedler & Co., Macbeth Galleries, Milch Galleries, Newhouse Galleries, Arthur U. Newton Galleries, Norton Galleries, and Howard Young Galleries; the estates of Anna Coleman Ladd and William E. Norton; and the family of Abbott H. Thayer.Researchers should note that the records do not comprehensively span the gallery's history or operations. The bulk of the collection is correspondence from Robert C. Vose's era running the Robert C. Vose Galleries in the 1920s-1930s and, lesser so, under Robert C. Vose, Jr.'s direction in the 1970s. There is little material in the collection which dates before the 1910s or the 1950s-1960s, other than correspondence regarding Alfred Jonniaux and some financial records. There is a handful of correspondence which covers the period of R.C. & N.M. Vose Gallery. Records loaned for microfilming should be consulted for materials outside of the bulk dates of this collection, especially for materials from the late 1800s-early 1900s.

René Gimpel papers

The papers of Parisian art dealer, René Gimpel (1881-1945), dating from circa 1890-1966 (bulk 1902-1930s), and measuring 0.4 linear feet, provide a small but significant window into the crucial relationship between American collectors and the art dealers who supplied them, as they amassed some of the most influential art collections of the first half of the twentieth century. Gimpel's work as an art dealer is documented through correspondence with his parents, clients, business associates, and collectors, including Helen Frick and Duveen Brothers, Blake-More Godwin and the Toledo Museum of Art, Florence Libbey, Samuel H. John Walker served as the first chief curator of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., from 1939 to 1956 and as its director from 1956 until his retirement in 1969. Walker discussed coming to the National Gallery from his position at the American Academy in Rome and his impressions of executive officers David Finley, Harry McBride, Macgill James, and Huntington Cairns. He described major acquisitions at the National Gallery of Art, art dealer Joseph Duveen, and art dealership in general. He explained his role in the design of the interior of the West Building and the initial planning of the East Building. He described the Gallery's emergency plans that were in effect during World War II. He also spoke of his friendship with Paul Mellon and his impressions of Andrew Mellon.

Series II (circa 155 linear feet) consists of papers and correspondence which broadly cover the interaction between the Duveen Brothers firm and its clients, business associates, and the public. The correspondence describes art collecting trends among museums and individuals, the availability and purchase of art, art research and authentication, and the firm's general business practices. Eleven boxes of correspondence with Bernard Berenson detail his business relationship with the firm. Also included are records of lawsuits, correspondence between branches (some written in code), correspondence with museums, papers regarding galleries, Edward Fowles' papers, papers concerning exhibitions and loans, and papers regarding major art collectors and consultants. Some records of Kleinberger Galleries (apparently the papers of Harry G. Sperling, president) form a subseries within this series, and contain correspondence. Series III (circa 127 linear feet) includes some photographs, indices, negatives, and x-rays. This series represents the Duveen Brother's stock of images. Indices are available for the majority of the negatives in cold storage.

These papers, dating from 1907-1931, chiefly document the construction and furnishing of Henry Clay Frick's New York residence at One East 70th Street, and encompass the period from Frick's acquisition of the property through the death of his widow in 1931. Materials include contracts, construction specifications, correspondence, architect's certificates, accounts payable vouchers, account books, financial records, and inventories, as well as documentation of activities at the house after its construction, additions to the building, and maintenance and improvement of the property. Series I through IV in this collection directly concern the construction of One East 70th Street. These papers give insight into the bidding and awarding of contracts, construction progress, auditing of accounts, and billing disputes. Correspondence of architect Thomas Hastings and his firm, Carrère and Hastings, construction superintendent D.B. Kinch, and Frick secretary F.W. McElroy appear frequently in these papers. Series V documents furnishings for the house, including carpets, draperies, furniture and decorative arts, wall coverings, light fixtures, and mantelpieces. Files of Elsie de Wolfe and White, Allom & Co. comprise the bulk of this series, although purchases from Duveen Brothers, E.R. Bacon, Jacques Seligmann, and others are documented as well. The last two series (VII and VIII) are devoted to postconstruction and estate matters, staffing, and family activities. They include inventories, additions such as the proposed sculpture gallery and Frick Art Reference Library, volumes documenting payroll, employee service, and household expenditures, and daily diaries of household events.
