Fitzhugh, written May 10, 1863 from Howards Grove Hospital, Richmond, Va., to Dr. J.L (James Lawrence) Cabell at the General Hospital, Charlottesville, requesting transfer to Charlottesville. Cabell's response, on the verso of the letter and dated May 13, indicates he has abundant room and approves the proposed transfer. Special Order No 102, dated November 3, 1863, detailing Private F.C. Fitzhugh to act as clerk of the General Court Martial ... of the 2d Corps A.N.V. Ca. 1864 pass permitting F.C. Fitzhugh to go to Gordonsville, Orange County, Va., signed A.W. Garber, commanding Staunton Artillery. Various furloughs dated 1865 are written on verso of pass. Pocket diary principally from the period October 1864-April 1865, but with other wartime and pre- and postwar dates, describing in some detail events around the time of the Confederate surrender in April 1865. February 23, 1900, edition of the Madison News (Madison, Va.) with partial transcript of two letters written by Frank Fitzhugh given to the newspaper by Sheriff D.M. Pattie. The letters were written to Fitzhugh's brother, Catlett Fitzhugh, and describe events at the Battle of the Wilderness, principally the actions of Frank Fitzhugh's artillery battery from April 14 to May 10. The newspaper reports that it will have to print the letters as a continued piece in several issues. Clipping from the March 9, 1900, Madison News, with more of Fitzhugh's letters describing events in May-June (Cold Harbor) and October 1864 (Cedar Creek). Fitzhugh writes that "Garber's battery is one of the hardest battery's in service, and I have but little love for it."
