The portion of the Emmet Collection housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Division consists of approximately 10,800 historical manuscripts relating chiefly to the period prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. The collection contains letters and documents by the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as nearly every prominent historical figure of the period.

Diary of Atkinson's journey (1724 January 15-May 14) to Canada on a diplomatic mission to Gov. Vaudreuil relating to problems with Indians and violations of the Treaty of Utrecht; contains descriptions of his travels through New York, meetings with Indians in New York and Canada, and meetings with French colonial officials in Canada. Also, diary of Atkinson's journey (1754 June 3-July 19) as commissioner from New Hampshire to the treaty conferences relating to the Six Nations in Albany, N.Y. Persons mentioned in the journal include William Dudley, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Hutchinson, John Schuyler, and Edward Taylor.

Report of John Penn and Richard Peters, Pennsylvania commissioners to the Albany Congress, to Lt. Gov. James Hamilton and the Council, 6 Aug. 1754, on their purchase of more land beyond the Susquehanna from the Six Nations. The report begins with accounts of other negotiations for the same or adjacent lands which were in progress or rumored on their arrival, especially with agents of Connecticut, and consultations with various tribal leaders. Following is an account of part of the proceedings of the Albany Congress on 30 June, when it was decided not to make the Pennsylvania sale part of the Congressional proceedings. Next are accounts of the commissioners' meetings on 5 and 6 July with representatives of the Six Nations, in which they reached an agreement for the purchase of land up to the western border of Penn's grant, and the text of the deed from the Six Nations to proprietors Thomas and Richard Penn. Next is an account of a meeting on 9 July at which the participants ratified the treaty of 1736 (full text and endorsement given) whereby the Six Nations agreed not to sell any land within the boundaries of Penn's grant to anyone but the proprietors. There follows a list of Indians present, by tribe and/or location, with their original and European names. The report concludes with a statement that the Connecticut agents were satisfied of Penn's claim and agreed to stop their negotiations for the same land. Persons prominently involved include commissioners John Penn, Richard Peters, Isaac Norris, and Benjamin Franklin; Hendrick, the Mohawk sachem and chief spokesman for the Six Nations; William Franklin; Thomas Pownall; and Conrad Weiser, interpreter.

Topics in the papers include Meshech Weare's duties with the New Hampshire militia, superior court, and council; various New Hampshire land grant matters; the 1754 Albany Congress; and Richard Weare's service with the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment during the Revolution at Crown Point and Ticonderoga, N.Y., Exeter and Hampton Falls, N.H., and Portland, Me. Correspondents include Henry Dearborn, Joseph Davenport, Silas Hodges, Nathaniel Peabody, and John Pickering.

Contemporary copy of minutes kept during the Albany Congress (held at the Court House in Albany, New York), 19 June-10 July 1754. Minutes contain information about the British government's effort to conciliate the Six Nations of Iroquois; the renewal of a treaty to prevent the Iroquois from joining the French; land settlements; the removal of Col. William Johnson from the management of Indian affairs; trade; forts; and Christian missions. Some of the tribes mentioned include Mohawk, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Oneida, Abnaki (Abenaki), Stockbridge, and Scaticook (Schaticook).

Norris, Joseph, 1699-1733. Miscellaneous writings of Joseph Norris, 1723-1776.

Title: Miscellaneous writings of Joseph Norris, 1723-1776.

A ledger containing miscellaneous writings by Joseph Norris penned between 1723 and 1733. After his death, the book was apparently taken over and continued by his brother Isaac Norris (1701-1766), and then by Isaac Norris's daughter Mary Norris Dickinson (1740 - 1803). Joseph Norris's writings consist of verses, devotional poetry, notes on church history and doctrine, etc. Also included are drafts of his letters to "Fair Maid," (1723, July 21); "My Esteemed Friend" (1723, Oct. 23,), "Dear Susy" (1723, Sept. 13), and Isaac Norris (1731, May 18). Miscellaneous poems, notes, etc., written most likely by Isaac Norris between 1736 and 1762. Included are: "Obitum Josephi Norris" (In Latin); a poem satirizing the Pennsylvania Assembly ("State House," ca. 1740), verses on the death of Patrick Gordon (May 5, 1736) and "G. George" (1737), "Soliloquy: Verses occasioned by a Letter in ye Pennsylvania Gazette. Printed ye Mercury 1737," and a note describing a visit to John Bartram's "greenhouse" (March 1762). Also included are the poems by Hannah Griffiths (1727- ca. 1809), a Quaker poet who wrote under the pseudonym Fidelia: "The Wish" (1754), "To Isaac Norris, Esq. on his return from Indian Treaty at Albany July 1754," "To the Honorable Society of Informers" ( Feb. 1776), "Stability. Alluding to the 13th Psalm" (1776, Nov.), and "On the anniversary of the 4th of July 1776." According to the attached note by George Washington Norris (1808-1875), "the leaves which are missing I tore out & destroyed, believing that my father had he looked it over have done the same."

Correspondence and various other papers of Franklin's, most originally from the Cadwallader Colden Papers (1743-1786). Topics include the formation of the American Philosophical Society; scientific subjects such as circulation of the blood in animals, effect of rotation of the earth upon speed of sailing vessels, law of gravitation, and electrical experiments; minutes of the Albany Congress, 1754; a draft of his plan for uniting the Colonies; a military appointment certificate; an order to pay; and other political and military matters. One letter is in French.
