Title: Philis Alvic Collection (#20053) 1991-1998

Philis Alvic is an artist/weaver and writer who maintains a studio in Lexington, Ky. She weaves wall hangings using complex weave structures. Her textiles have been shown at more than 100 exhibits throughout the United States. The collection consists of documentation of early weaving in the Southern Highlands in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and around Penland, N.C.; the beginnings of the Penland School of Crafts (formerly Penland School of Handicrafts); and the weaving room at Crossnore School, Inc., in Crossnore, N.C. Materials include audio cassettes, documents, and photographic slides, most developed by Alvic with grant support from the North Carolina Arts Council and the North Carolina Humanities Council. Audiocassettes contain oral history interviews with weavers, their friends and relatives, and other people connected with the early years of the Penland School. Documents include pamphlets on the history of weaving in the Southern Highlands and other materials. Photographic slides include images of interior and exterior shots of the Penland School, portraits of weavers, slides of crafts, and slides of historic Penland photographs.

John Ehle Papers, 1918-1993

Title: John Ehle Papers, 1918-1993

John Marsden Ehle Jr., author of novels and works of non-fiction, was born in Asheville, N.C., and has lived most of his adult life in Winston-Salem. He served as special assistant to North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, 1963-1964, and has been instrumental in establishing and furthering many significant educational, desegregation, and anti-poverty projects. He is married to British actress Rosemary Harris. The collection includes materials documenting both the literary career and public service activities of John Ehle. Literary materials include correspondence, clippings, and financial items relating to Ehle's novels and other works, as well as notes, drafts, and galleys. Family items include correspondence of Ehle's parents and a few items relating to Rosemary Harris. Other materials relate to Ehle's work with various public and private institutions. These include files generated in the course of Ehle's work in the Governor's Office, especially his efforts on behalf of the North Carolina School of the Arts and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. There are also files relating to the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Federation for the Arts and Humanities, Duke University, and the Penland School of Crafts. Photographs and audio-visual materials include family photographs and photographs by Ehle, Jim Wallace, and others of civil rights activists and protests in Chapel Hill, N.C., and other locations compiled for use in Ehle's book ; audiodisks of radio shows that Ehle wrote or acted in; tapes of interviews done for various books; and filmstrips, chiefly on North Carolina history, which Ehle produced, sometimes in collaboration with others. A few items relate to Rosemary Harris. The Addition of December 2010 is a journal with detailed entries, 1962-1964, about John Ehle's work as special assistant to North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, his writing career, the foundations and projects he supported, and his personal life. The collection includes correspondence and other materials relating to LeGette Blythe's literary and civic projects. Included are letters, promotional material, and photographs, as well as audio and video recordings relating to outdoor drama productions and to Blythe's biographies of Thomas Wolfe; Mary T. Martin Sloop of the Crossnore School, Avery County, N.C.; Lucy Morgan of the Penland School, Penland, N.C.; and Gaine Cannon of the Albert Schweitzer Memorial Hospital in Balsam Grove, N.C. Major correspondents include W. H. Belk, Elizabeth Boatwright Coker, William Friday, Louis Rubin, Terry Sanford, and Richard Walser. There are also two letters dated March 1934 from Maxwell Perkins of Charles Scribner's Sons. Also present are materials relating to the North Carolina Writers Conference, including photographs of the conference's first meeting in 1950 and the 1953 meeting in Boone. Manuscripts, galleys, and proofs of Blythe's works are included along with a small amount of materials and photographs collected by Blythe, including items, 1815-1861, relating to the Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County. The Addition of May 2002 includes audio and video recordings collected by Blythe and photographs of Albert Schweitzer and his hospital from the 1960s; of the United States Army's 38th Evacuation Hospital during World War II; and of labor strikes in North Belmont, N.C., in the late 1920s. The Addition of 2006 includes audio recordings collected by Blythe as research for books, manuscripts and other projects. Interviewees include Fred and Mabel Wolfe, siblings of Thomas Wolfe; Mary T. Martin Sloop; James W. Davis, Gaine Cannon II, and Lucy Morgan. Other recordings relate to LeGette Blythe's works on I. D. Blumenthal, E. H. Little, Walter L. Lingle, and Alcoholics Anonymous. Also included are interviews with prominent North Carolinians, including Colonel Thomas W. Ferrebee, bombardier of the Enola Gay, and Senator Sam J. Ervin. The addition also contains an interview with LeGette Blythe, recordings of the outdoor drama "Voice in the Wilderness," and the soundtrack for "The Hornet's Nest."
