Painter from Detroit, Michigan, primarily of pictures of Indians.
John Mix Stanley (1814-1872), began painting Indians in 1838, was with Gen. Kearny's California expedition in 1846, and toured the Pacific Northwest in 1847-48. In 1853 he was an artist on Gov. Stevens's expedition to survey a northern route for the Pacific railroad.
In 1853, the United States Congress appointed the Army's topographic bureau to conduct six surveys to find the best route for a transcontinental railroad. Isaac Stevens, governor of Washington territory, led the northern survey along the 47th parallel between St. Paul, Minnesota and the Puget Sound. In addition to exploring and mapping the territories, the surveys studied the Indians, the animals and the natural features of each area. The Stevens expedition employed two artists to illustrate the report: John Mix Stanley and Gustavus Sohon.

Stanley, John Mix, 1814-1872. Lithographs, 1850s-1889.
Title:
Lithographs, 1850s-1889.
Artificial collection of lithographs from published sources. The first five lithographs in the collection are images of Spokane homes, removed from History of the Pacific Northwest Oregon and Washington, published in 1889. These are done by unknown artists. The remainder of the lithographs are from the U. S. P. R. R. Surveys and created by John Mix Stanley and Gustavus Sohon. They were taken from the twelfth volume of the 1860 War Department Reports of Explorations and Surveys. They represent some of the earliest published images of the Northwest. These lithographs illustrate the region's landmarks as well as scenes showing the region's Indians. A few of the illustrations show early white settlement or missionary activities.

Topics of interest include a contested 1847 election with Henry P. Irving; the admission of California, and the Compromise of 1850; the Nashville Convention of 1850; slavery, abolition, and the ante-bellum South; the Whig, Democrat and American (Know Nothing) parties; the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1880; and local Appomattox Co. politics. Many prominent figures of the day are mentioned including Webster, Clay, Calhoun, Cass, Douglas, Polk, Taylor, Pierce, Fillmore, Buchanan, Hayes, and Louis Kossuth. Speeches on the tariff of 1842, the Wilmot Proviso, slavery, the Confederacy, and William Wilson Corcoran are included, as are a memorandum book, 1861-1866, of personal finances, papers from his chairmanship of the House Committee on Naval Affairs, a printed report on the Confederate Navy, and some legal and financial papers. The family papers contain correspondence, financial and legal papers. Stevens, Isaac Ingalls, 1818-1862. Isaac Ingalls Stevens letters to John Mix Stanley, 1853 May 29-Jun 2.
Title:
Isaac Ingalls Stevens letters to John Mix Stanley, 1853 May 29-Jun 2.
Two ALS dated May 28 and June 2, 1853, written from Camp Pierce, located about nine miles from St. Paul, Minnesota, where Stevens and members of his Northern Pacific railroad survey party were encamped prior to the beginning of their expedition. The letters contain instructions for Stanley to attend the "Indian Council of the Sioux" with Minnesota Governor Arnold Gorman, and make sketches of what Stanley observes of interest. Stevens states that by Stanley's attending the Council meeting and informing the Indians of the expedition he expects to "add much to the friendly feelings of such tribes who inhabit the Regions we pass through."
