Sam Ragan Papers, 1948-1996

Title: Sam Ragan Papers, 1948-1996

Samuel Talmadge Ragan (1915-1996) was managing and executive editor of the (Raleigh, N.C.), 1948-1969; editor and publisher of (Southern Pines, N.C.), 1969-1996; award-winning poet; writing teacher; and supporter of the arts in North Carolina. Ragan served as the first secretary of the North Carolina Department of Art, Culture, and History from 1972 to 1973. In 1982, he was named Poet Laureate of the state of North Carolina by Governor James B. Hunt. He was also chair of the North Carolina Arts Council, chair of the North Carolina Writers' Conference, and president of the Friends of Weymouth, which operates the Weymouth Center for Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines. Ragan died at his home in Southern Pines on 11 May 1996. News and Observer The Pilot Papers document Sam Ragan's career as a journalist and his role as patron of the arts in North Carolina. Correspondence files include materials relating to newspaper organizations, the North Carolina Arts Council, North Carolina Writers' Conference, North Carolina Writers' Network, and the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities. Guy Owen (1925- ), novelist, poet, literary critic, editor, and professor of English at North Carolina State University. The collection includes writings, research material, correspondence, subject files, and other papers. Many of the drafts were never published. Drafts, notes, correspondence, interviews, photographs, and other materials are related to Tyson's publications "Blood Done Sign My Name" (2004), a personal history about a racial murder in Oxford, N.C., in 1970; "Radio Free Dixie: Robert F. Williams and the Roots of Black Power" (1999); and his master's thesis, "Burning for Freedom" (1990), also about race and Oxford, N.C. Some items relate to the Reverend Vernon Tyson, civil rights activist and Tim Tyson's father; Eddie McCoy, Oxford civil rights activist; and writer Thad Stem. Audio recordings are mainly of oral history interviews centering on race relations. Collection contains a typescript of A FLAGSTONE WALK. It is a collection of Stem's short stories, each prefaced with remarks. Many of the characters are of the Southern white middle class and reveal much about the language, attitudes, and interests of this class in contemporary Southern society. The second item is a manuscript of Stem's ENTRIES FROM OXFORD. The story is built around Stem's father and includes much local information, including descriptions of personalities of a number of Oxford residents.

Swansea, Charleen. Charleen Swansea papers, 1928-2004.

Title: Charleen Swansea papers, 1928-2004.

The collection includes correspondence and other materials, some relating to Swansea's relationship with poet Ezra Pound. Letters, most written in 1955, chiefly concern daily activities, mutual acquaintances, and, to a lesser extent, literary matters. In 1946, Ezra Pound was declared mentally unfit to stand trial for treason and was committed to Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D.C., where he remained for 12 years. Other items include ideograms in Chinese characters made by Pound for Swansea, writings by Swansea and others, printed material about Pound, and other items. Also included are editorial and other correspondence, editorial notes, business records, publicity material, manuscripts and art work submitted for publication, mailing lists, and other items, 1963-1976, relating to the Red Clay Reader. Some of the authors represented in these materials appear as online catalog headings. Photographs include a few of Ezra Pound and several relating to the Red Clay Reader. The Addition of April 2008 includes Swansea's unpublished memoirs; a book authored by Swansea titled "Mindworks: How to Become a More Creative and Critical Thinker" (South Carolina ETV, 1990); a videotape of a speech given by Swansea at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.; and a DVD collection of documentaries by Ross McElwee in which Swansea appears.
